Spring starts again, 5 tips on how to get you and your bike on the road safely

3 min reading time

The motorcycle can come out of winter storage again and face spring. Of course, you want to be on the road safely and well prepared. We help you and explain the best way to get your motorcycle out of hibernation.

Spring has begun. For motorcycle enthusiasts, it's a great time. You can get back on the road with your motorcycle. But don't underestimate the effect of months of downtime for your engine's running parts. Preparing the engine for the months of downtime before the winter break is important, but the right treatment after the winter break is at least as important. Apply our 5 tips and you can hit the road again with safe equipment.

Check how the motorcycle made it through the winter

You should check the condition of the engine carefully for your own safety. For some important check points, you do not need to have technical understanding. In particular, check the following points:

  • Has the motorcycle leaked? Check for fluids under the engine. Leaks can indicate problems;
  • Check the brakes and lights. These are logical check points, but perform them before you hit the road. You shouldn't think about actually using the brakes just before a turn. You will hit the road in bright nice weather, but proper lighting may be necessary along the way. Even in spring;
  • Do your tires still have the right pressure? Proper tire pressure reduces fuel consumption and it saves the tires. It is also important for safety. With proper pressure, the bike has better handling and a shorter braking distance.

Clean the greased parts

Before placing the motorcycle in winter storage, it is advisable to grease movable parts. These include the chain, ignition switch and hinges. Make sure that you do properly clean the greased parts of the motorcycle again in the spring. It is especially about the parts that are subjected to high temperatures. This is because the grease can burn in.

Get used to the engine carefully again

Being on a motorcycle gives a sense of freedom, but compared to riding in a car, there are additional dangers. You need to get the feel of the vehicle again first. During the first ride, take it easy. This way you will check the quality (is it running well?) and you will quickly pick up the safe way of riding again.

Change the engine oil and filter

Possibly the engine oil has become dirty. Changing the oil is as much of a hassle, but that's why you should do it right before you head into spring. That way you can't forget. While you are changing the oil, replace the filter as well. A small effort to do it at the same time.

Make sure the battery is fully charged

Before winter break, put your motorcycle on a trickle charger. Have you not done this? Then make sure your battery is charged before you hit the road. This will prevent the motorcycle from having difficulty or not wanting to start in the spring.

You are ready to use the motorcycle in spring and summer. We wish you much riding pleasure.

Bonus Tip;

Of course, don't forget your motorcycle insurance. Have you opted for the so-called winter break? Then see if you can already take the motorcycle on the road.
