The cost of the boating license depends on which license you get and how you learn for the license. There are two types of boating licenses: Sailing License 1 and Sailing License 2. What does a boating license course cost?
The cost of a license course is up to you. You can of course choose to get the license through self-study, in which case you only have to pay €20 for the textbook. However, the course material is quite complicated, making it more difficult to follow with just self-study. You can also choose to take a course. There are learning schools that offer a day course, where you go to school for one day and then continue studying at home. A day course costs about $150. You can also take an online course, where you are taught digitally. The cost of an online course is usually between €75 and €100.
During a course, you will learn everything you need to know for the boating license exam. For example, you will learn how to handle the rudder, how the outboard motor works, how to moor and what to do if someone goes overboard. In addition, regulations and laws on the water are often reviewed. The Boating License 2 course goes a step further, of course, and focuses on navigation and meteorology, among other topics.
What does a boating license exam cost?
To get your boating license, you only need to pass a theory exam, not a practical exam. To pass Boating License 2, you must successfully pass both the KVB1 and KVB2 exams. You can take both exams consecutively, or take KVB1 first and KVB2 later. The cost for the KVB1 exam is €44.45. The cost for the KVB2 exam is €52.90. You could save on costs by not taking a course, but rather mastering the material through self-study. In our experience, however, the material can be quite complicated, and the success rate is higher with a course. You can decide what is the best learning method for you.
What does applying for the boating license cost?
Finally, there is the cost of applying for the boating license. These are €10.60 for both KVB1 and KVB2. Are you going directly for KVB 2? Then you only need to apply for a boating license once. If you first obtain KVB 1 and only last KVB 2, you will have to apply twice for a boating license and thus pay twice the cost.
