All about your dinghy insurance
Are you looking for a way to insure your dinghy? At Alpina.nl , we have boat insurance for every boat! A boat is a precious possession. With a good boat insurance you ensure that you are insured in case of damage. You choose which coverage you take out.
Rubber boat or RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat)?
A dinghy is often confused with a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). Yet they are different craft. A dinghy is made of material that holds air, so it lies on the water. A RIB lies in the water instead of on it. A RIB is often used for rescue operations on the water. Due to the fixed construction of a RIB the boat cannot be folded, whereas a rubber boat can be folded in most cases.
Is dinghy insurance compulsory?
No, insurance for a dinghy is not mandatory. In the Netherlands, WA boat insurance is only mandatory in a few situations. This is if you want to moor your boat in certain marinas, if you sail races with your boat, at a boat storage facility and at certain waterways or parts thereof. Do you ever go boating abroad? Then boat insurance may be required by law. This is often the case in Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Croatia, Italy and Spain. Think about this when taking your boat on vacation.
When to insure a dinghy?
Although boat insurance is not compulsory, it is wise to insure your dinghy. If you cause an accident with your boat and consequently cause damage to someone else or someone else's property, the costs can mount up considerably. Especially if you also have to deal with personal injury. Therefore you may consider to take out at least a WA boat insurance. With a WA-boat insurance you are insured for liability damages that you cause with your boat. Of course it is also possible to include damage to your own boat in the insurance. You can then choose for a more extensive coverage. Do you use your boat a lot? Then a good boat insurance is recommended.
Rubber boat insurance: which cover?
When insuring your dinghy, you have a choice of three different coverages: WA, WA + Limited Casco or WA + Full Casco (also called Allrisk). Besides the WA boat insurance you can also choose a more extensive coverage. With the WA + Limited Comprehensive coverage you are also insured for damage caused by fire, auto-ignition, explosion, storm and hail. With an all-risk boat insurance you are fully insured. For example, did you collide with the quay while mooring the boat? Then all-risk insurance covers the repair costs to your boat.
