Insuring a Boat Without a Boating License
When taking out boat insurance, you will be asked whether you have a boating license. If you don’t have a boating license, this isn’t necessarily a problem. That’s because you don’t need a boating license for every boat. Whether you need a boating license depends on your boat’s maximum speed and length. If you don’t need a boating license to operate your boat, you can simply insure your boat, even without a license.
So when do you need a boating license?
Whether you need a boating license therefore depends on two factors:
- The maximum speed of your boat
- The length of your boat
Anyone may operate a sailboat, rowboat, pedal boat, or canoe, provided it is less than 7 meters long. There is no age restriction for this. For boats between 7 and 15 meters in length, the operator must be at least 16 years old. For all boats longer than 15 meters, you need a boating license. In addition, the boat’s operator must be at least 18 years old. The boat’s maximum speed is also taken into account. If a motorboat can travel faster than 20 km/h, it is considered a high-speed motorboat, and you need a boating license. An inflatable boat with more than 5 PK can usually travel faster than 20 km/h. Therefore, you will still need a boating license for it. When insuring a boat, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a boating license, provided that you don’t need one for your specific boat.
Is boat insurance required?
In the Netherlands, it is not mandatory to insure your boat. However, third-party liability insurance for boats is required in certain situations. This applies, for example, during races, in a marina, in a boat storage facility, or on (part of) the waterways.
