How do I insure a switchblade moped?
Are you the proud owner of a shifter moped? Then of course you want to insure it properly. A shifting moped has been around a lot longer than a moped. A shifting moped has a manual transmission, something most mopeds no longer have these days. With a shifting moped, you have a little more control because you have to change gears yourself. There are still switch mopeds for sale, and therefore, of course, there needs to be an appropriate moped insurance. At Alpina, we have the right insurance for every moped. We tell you all about insuring a gearshift moped here.
Am I obligated to insure a switchblade moped?
Yes, you are required to insure your switch moped. In the Netherlands, it is mandatory for every motor vehicle to have at least a WA insurance. With a third-party insurance you are insured for damage you cause to another person. Damage to your own vehicle is not insured with this coverage, you must take out comprehensive coverage such as WA + Limited Casco or Allrisk.
Motorcycle insurance: what cover should I choose?
When taking out insurance for your moped, you can choose from three different types of cover: Third Party, Third Party + or All Risk. Which cover you should choose depends on your personal situation and your moped. Let us briefly explain the three types of cover:
Third-party cover
If you choose WA coverage, you are only insured for damage you cause to another person. You take out WA insurance because it is compulsory, of course, but also to protect yourself. If you hit another driver with your moped at a low speed, you might only get away with damage to your eyeballs, but if you hit another moped or pedestrian at high speed, you might also cause personal injury. The consequences of personal injury are significant and can be expensive. With WA insurance, you are insured against this.
WA+ coverage
If you prefer a more extensive insurance, you can also choose the WA+ insurance. This is also called WA + Theft and Fire. With this policy, you are therefore also insured for damage caused by fire and for theft. Especially theft can be a useful addition to your moped insurance. Mopeds are very popular with thieves. Don't forget to check your insurer's policy conditions to see if there are any conditions attached to this cover. One condition could be that you have to have a good quality lock on your switch moped. If you do not have one and the moped is stolen, the insurance may still not cover you.
All-risk cover
The most comprehensive cover you can choose is the all-risk moped insurance. This not only covers you for all the damage mentioned above, but also for damage to your own moped, even if you yourself are responsible for the damage. All-risk cover is often chosen for very new or expensive mopeds.
