How can I insure a switchblade moped?
Are you the proud owner of a shifter moped? Then of course you want to insure it properly. A shifting moped has been around a lot longer than a moped. A shifting moped has a manual transmission, something most mopeds no longer have these days. With a shifting moped, you have a little more control because you have to change gears yourself. There are still switch mopeds for sale, and therefore, of course, there needs to be an appropriate moped insurance. At Alpina, we have the right insurance for every moped. We tell you all about insuring a gearshift moped here.
Am I required to insure a switchblade moped?
Yes, you are required to insure your switch moped. In the Netherlands, it is mandatory for every motor vehicle to have at least a WA insurance. With a third-party insurance you are insured for damage you cause to another person. Damage to your own vehicle is not insured with this coverage, you must take out comprehensive coverage such as WA + Limited Casco or Allrisk.
Switching moped insurance: what coverage should I choose?
When purchasing moped insurance for your shifter moped, you can choose from three different coverages: WA, WA + or All-risk. The best coverage to choose depends on your personal situation and your moped. We briefly explain the three coverages:
WA coverage
If you choose third-party coverage, you are only insured for damage you cause to another person. You take out third-party insurance because it is mandatory, of course, but also to protect yourself. If you don't hit another driver too hard with your moped, you may get away with just eye damage, but if you hit another moped or pedestrian at considerable speed, you may also cause personal injury. The consequences of personal injury are serious and can be costly. With third-party insurance you are insured against this.
WA+ coverage
If you prefer to be a little more extensively insured, you can also choose the WA+ insurance. This is also called WA + Theft and Fire. With this you are also insured for damage by fire and theft. Especially theft can be a useful addition to your moped insurance. Mopeds are very popular with thieves. Remember to check your insurer's policy conditions to see if there are any conditions attached to this coverage. For example, one condition may be that you must have a good quality lock on your shifter moped. If you do not have these and the moped is stolen, the insurance may still not provide coverage.
All-risk coverage
The most comprehensive coverage you can choose is all-risk moped insurance. This not only insures you for all the damages mentioned above, but also for damage to your own shifting moped, even if you yourself are liable for the damage. All-risk coverage is often chosen for very new or expensive mopeds.
