Moped license plate
Every vehicle must have a license plate before it can be driven on public roads. So this also applies to a moped. Since 2007, all new mopeds have had a license plate by default, because that is when the moped license plate was introduced. However, older mopeds do not have a license plate by default. If you bought an older moped, you need to apply for a license plate yourself. On Alpina.nl you can read all about the moped license plate.
Moped license plate lost
Sometimes it happens that the license plate of a moped is stolen or lost. In that case, you can purchase a new license plate from a license plate manufacturer recognized by the RDW. To do this, you must bring the original vehicle proof of paper registration certificate (Part IA) or the registration card. We cannot tell you in advance what a new license plate will cost, this is up to each manufacturer. Therefore, you may be more expensive with one manufacturer than another. You will then receive new license plates with a duplicate code from the manufacturer. The duplicate code is a number on the license plate that indicates how many times license plates have been issued for the moped.

Moped license plate application
At the RDW you can apply for a license plate for your moped. Before they issue a license plate, however, you will have to have your moped inspected by the RDW. During the inspection, they check whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads and they check the technical condition. To apply for a license plate, you can follow the following steps:
- First, you must make an appointment for the inspection. You can do this at 'Make an inspection appointment'.
- Your moped must of course pass the inspection, but you are not yet allowed to drive it on public roads. For this you can apply for a day registration plate. You can do this on 'Apply for a day registration'. With a day licence plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
- After the inspection, the RDW will send you a registration card by mail within 5 working days. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, all vehicle obligations apply, such as having a license plate and third-party insurance.
- Finally, you buy the license plate. You can do this at a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW.
There are some conditions to applying for a license plate. For example, you must be at least 16 years old and registered in the Basic Registration of Persons. You must also appear in person at the inspection and have valid identification.
License plate check moped
Once a license plate is registered in your name, your personal data are registered in the RDW's license plate register. In addition, data about the vehicle are also registered. To find out these data, you can do a license plate check. You can only request non-privacy-sensitive data about the moped. So your personal data cannot be found out by just anyone. A license plate check is useful if you want to buy or sell a moped. It allows you to check the information given. You can do a license plate check here.
Once you have entered the moped's registration number, you will see a number of details, such as the type of vehicle, make and number of owners. In addition, you will see, for example, when the MOT expires and when the moped was last transferred. You can also see if third-party insurance has been registered for the vehicle.
Moped without license plate
In 2007, the license plate for mopeds was introduced. This means that all mopeds from 2007 and later have a license plate by default. Mopeds from before 2007 usually do not have a license plate. So if you acquire an old moped, for example through a relative or second-hand website, you will have to apply for a license plate yourself. Before taking it on the road, don't forget to apply for a license plate and look into moped insurance right away! At least third-party insurance is mandatory for your moped.
