What types of thatched roofs are there?
There are two types of thatched roofs: a traditional thatched roof and a closed thatched roof. The latter is also called a screw roof. Both types of thatched roofs have advantages and disadvantages. When taking out home insurance, you specify what kind of thatched roof you have so that the premium can be adjusted accordingly. At Alpina.nl , we explain all about the types of thatched roofs and how best to insure them.
Traditional thatched roof
With a traditional roof, the thatch is tied on what are called reed slats. From the inside of the house, the thatch is therefore visible. With this method of thatching, oxygen can easily pass through the roof, causing it to spread easily during a fire. This makes a traditional thatched roof slightly less fireproof than a closed thatched roof.
Do you own a home with a traditional thatched roof? If so, you can take some preventive measures to reduce the risk of fire. For example, you can impregnate the thatch or install a sprinkler system. This humidifies the thatch from the inside, which ensures that fire cannot spread easily. Applying fire-resistant boards can also help. If you take good preventive measures, this in turn can be beneficial for the amount of the insurance premium.
Closed thatched roof or screw roof
With a closed roof or screw roof, the thatch comes on a dense substrate, such as insulation boards or plywood. A closed thatched roof is more fireproof and better insulated. As a result, almost no oxygen gets through the roof, so a fire is less likely to spread. However, a closed thatched roof must meet certain safety requirements. Because a screw roof carries fewer risks, the premium is not much higher than for a house with tiles.
How do I insure my type of thatched roof?
You can contact us for any type of thatched roof home insurance. An insurer usually does set a number of conditions for insuring a home with a thatched roof. Conditions include:
- You must have an approved fire extinguisher in your home
- The chimney should be swept at least once a year
- If you have a fireplace or wood stove, spark arrestors must be installed on the roof
- On the inside of the thatched roof must be fire-resistant sheeting
- The house itself must be made of stone. You cannot insure a wooden house with a thatched roof with most insurers
