Should I insure my loaner car?

The moment your car is at the garage for an inspection, maintenance or repair, a loaner car from garage can be a godsend. But what about car insurance? Are you required to insure a loaner car or does the garage have to provide car insurance?

Who should insure the loaner car?

In most cases, garages will carry third-party insurance on their cars. With third-party insurance, you are covered for damage you cause to another person. Damage to your own vehicle is not covered by the car insurance with this coverage. You run the least risk when the car has WA limited casco or Allrisk coverage.

Loaner car insurance

Loaner car insurance coverage.

So a loaner car from the garage is not entirely without risk. Although the loaner car is insured for liability damage, damage to the car itself is therefore not insured. Therefore, should you cause damage to the car yourself, the garage company can hold you responsible for this damage. Even at the time when the damage is not your own fault, due to vandalism for example, you will in principle have to pay for the damage.

Loaner car? Check insurance with garage

Do you need a loaner car? Always check well in advance with your garage company how the loaner car is insured and what the conditions are. As long as you have the car on loan, you are responsible for the car. Even if the car is All-risk insured, you may still face costs in the event of a claim. For example, the garage company can recover the deductible due from you. It is important to have this clear in advance before you take the car home.

Insure the risk of your loaner car?

However, there are still options for additional insurance. For example, the garage company can offer you the option to also insure the car with hull insurance. The garage can then charge the extra costs to you. Your car must be WA-casco (all-risk) insured, and your own car must be in the lending garage at that time for maintenance or damage repair or MOT inspection.
