Can I insure my MMBS vehicle?
We regularly receive requests to insure MMBS vehicles. This can be done through a separate MMBS insurance policy.
What is an MMBS vehicle?
MMBS stands for Limited Speed Motor Vehicle. This is a passenger car or van that has been reconditioned to 25 mph or 45 mph. So on the outside, this looks like a regular car, but there are modifications made to the engine, so this vehicle will only reach a certain maximum speed.
To drive an MMBS vehicle, you must be 16 years of age or older and have a T-driving license (also known as a tractor license).
MMBS vehicles are popular among under-18s because you only need to have a T license to drive this vehicle. The advantage of such a vehicle is that it has all the comfort and convenience of a car, but you do not need to have a car license to drive this vehicle.
How can I turn my vehicle into an MMBS vehicle?
This does not happen overnight and there are quite a few conditions for this as well. This procedure goes entirely through the RDW. The vehicle must be officially reapproved/refitted before it is an MMBS vehicle. MMBS vehicles do not have a registration requirement. In recent years, there have been several changes in the rules, as a result of which not every car can be converted to an MMBS vehicle.
Should an MMBS vehicle be insured?
Yes, insurance requirements also apply to MMBS vehicles. At a minimum, third-party insurance must be taken out for this vehicle. Have you not taken out appropriate insurance? Then you run the risk of a hefty fine.
Verification of insurance requirements is performed by the police. Since MMBS vehicles do not have license plates, it is not possible for the RDW to perform the check, as they do for all registered vehicles.
The police also check whether you have the correct driving license to drive an MMBS vehicle.
Who can insure my MMBS vehicle?
