Car insurance seniors: why more expensive?

It is common knowledge that car insurance for young people under 24 is more difficult to obtain than for someone older. The premium is also usually a lot higher. Young people under 24 are seen as higher risk. Figures show that these inexperienced drivers are more likely to cause damage. The same is true for older drivers. Do seniors also pay more for car insurance because of this?

Car insurance for seniors

The three standard forms of insurance in auto insurance are:

When buying a car, you should immediately purchase at least third-party insurance. Damages caused to others are compensated with this coverage. For cars of 10 years or older, only the compulsory third-party insurance is often chosen. This insurance does not cover damage to your own car.

A good alternative with broader coverage is the third-party limited collision insurance. This coverage compensates not only damages to others. Damages caused by a collision with stray animals, hail and storm, lightning, fire and explosion, window breakage, theft and attempted theft are also covered by the limited hull insurance. Owners of cars between 6 and 10 years old often choose this coverage.

Owners of new cars up to about 6 years old often choose the most comprehensive coverage, which is all-risk insurance. With this coverage, damage to your own car due to collisions is also compensated by your own insurer. In addition, vandalism damage is also insured with all-risk coverage.

Car insurance for the elderly

Getting car insurance as a 60- or 70-year-old usually does not pose any problems yet. In fact, those in their sixties generally pay a favorable premium for insurance. Older drivers pay more for car insurance and also have fewer options. With certain insurers, it is not even possible to get car insurance as a 75-year-old. However, they can remain insured with these insurers. They are no longer eligible for new car insurance.

Claim-free years seniors

Damage-free years make auto insurance more affordable. They entitle you to a discount on the premium. By having car insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. You build up claim-free years as long as you do not drive any claims. Having or not having claim-free years makes a big difference. This can make a big difference for seniors. It can bridge the difference in premium.

Renewing driver's license as 65+

There are different rules for renewing a driver's license as a 65+ person than if you have not yet reached this age. In many cases, your license is not valid for the usual 10 years. If you are between the ages of 65 and 70 and you want to renew your driver's license, you can renew your license according to the usual procedure until you reach the age of 75. If your driver's license expires when you are between the ages of 70 and 75, you will get a driver's license for up to 5 years. For example, if you are 74 years old when your license expires, you will get a new license that you can use until age 79, without a medical examination.

From the age of 75, you must always undergo a medical examination when renewing your driver's license. When you apply, you must also fill out a health statement. Based on these two things, it will be determined whether your driver's license will be renewed. If these tests have a positive outcome, your driver's license will be renewed for up to 5 years.
