All about border insurance

When you start exporting a vehicle, you run the risk of falling between two stools. Dutch insurance companies cannot insure vehicles with foreign license plates and often do not want to insure a vehicle temporarily. Foreign insurance companies may refuse you insurance because you are not a resident. Alpina.nl has special border insurance for these cases.

You can apply for this border insurance and then you will have a 15-day WA coverage that allows you to drive the vehicle abroad.

Notice! This is civil liability insurance only. Any damage to third parties will be covered, but not damage to your own vehicle. After these 15 days, coverage expires automatically.

Cancellation may be possible up to the effective date of the green card. Once it takes effect and coverage is enjoyed, cancellation is no longer possible.

The border insurance is valid for 15 days. So you can worry-free you car export abroad. By abroad is meant all of Europe. After 15 days the insurance stops and you are no longer insured. So make sure you put the end date in your calendar!

Civil liability (WA)

With the border insurance you are WA insured. This means that you are insured for damage to other vehicles. You will not get compensation if you accidentally drive your car into a bollard. Also when you cause a traffic accident and your vehicle gets damaged you will not get compensation for the damage to your own vehicle. However, you will be compensated for the damage you caused to the other vehicle.

Payment for border insurance

Through Alpina.nl you can arrange the border insurance quickly. As soon as we have received your payment via iDEAL or PayPal, we will send you the green card immediately by e-mail and the next working day by post. Would you prefer to pay differently? Then you can opt for an e-mail with payment details. In that case it will take longer for you to receive the green card.

Do I need a certificate of insurance with border insurance?

The green card is an international certificate of insurance and should be accepted as such. Some foreign authorities accept it only if it is printed on green paper. We therefore advise you not to drive the vehicle until you have received the green card by mail. If you are going to drive earlier, print the green card on "green card paper" (available in bookstores) or other green paper just to be sure.

Did you print the card on white paper and an argument arises with the official about it? Then you can explain that it is a valid certificate of insurance and/or ask for another official (who may be more knowledgeable). Should you fail to get out and be forced to incur expenses, make a note of the official's name. That way, you can initiate a redress action at home, with or without the help of your legal expenses insurer, against the foreign authority.

Apply for license plates for export

Cancel insurance

The insurance may be cancelled up to the effective date of coverage, provided it is on a business day and is communicated before 5:00 p.m. Once the policyholder has or has enjoyed coverage, this green card cannot be cancelled through the right of withdrawal.
