Help, I can't insure my car. What should I do?
Every car owner is required to have at least third-party car insurance. This car insurance ensures that you are insured for damage you cause to another person. It is possible that your application for car insurance is refused by the insurer. Insurers do not have a duty of acceptance. If they feel you pose too great a risk, they may also refuse you as a policyholder. An insurer can refuse you for several reasons. At Alpina.nl we explain why your car insurance has been refused and how you can still insure your car.

Why can't I insure my car?
If you are declined for auto insurance, there can be several reasons. Insurers do risk analysis. They look at various factors in your past to determine how likely you are to claim compensation or be unable to pay the insurance premium. The greater that chance, the higher the premium. Once the risk is very high, such as because another insurer has terminated your insurance for non-payment, an insurer will reject your claim. There are a number of reasons why an insurer will deny you auto insurance.

What happens if a default occurs
It can happen to anyone: you move and lose a bill from your car insurance, making you late in paying. Or your bank account may be underfunded when the premium is charged. If you are late in paying your car insurance one time, you will not immediately become known as a defaulter. This only happens if you are late in paying several times or don't pay at all. If you are registered as a defaulter, chances are you will not be able to get car insurance from a regular insurance company.
I have driving disqualification what now?
Have you ever had a driving disqualification? A driving disqualification prevents you from driving a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. You get a driving disqualification in different situations, for example, if you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, if you continue driving after an accident, if you drive more than 50 kilometers per hour too fast, or if you get into your car with a driving disqualification or invalid license anyway. Even if your driving disqualification is lifted again, your car insurance may be refused because an insurer considers you too much of a risk.
Too many claims claimed what now?
Insurers can see in the national database Roy-Data how often you have made a claim in the past. Here they look especially at claims where legal assistance is important, such as theft or windshield damage. If you have often filed a claim, they assume you will do so in the future. This is a reason for the insurer to refuse your application for auto insurance.
I have a criminal record what now?
With a criminal record, you are more likely to be denied car insurance, even if your criminal record has nothing to do with your car or your driving record. This is because insurers see someone with a criminal record as a heightened moral hazard. In doing so, they assume that people with criminal records are less compliant with insurance rules. This is a reason for them not to accept you as a policyholder.
Young driver with a fast car is that a risk?
It sometimes happens that a young driver wants to insure a fast car. However, many insurers do not cooperate with this. Young drivers are seen as a risk group. In fact, statistics show that young drivers up to age 24 are on average more likely to make claims than older drivers. Young drivers, of course, also have less driving experience. Therefore, insurers often consider a young driver with a sporty, fast car too great a risk.

I have been caught with insurance fraud what now?
Insurers take insurance fraud seriously. If you are caught committing insurance fraud, this is registered with the CIS Foundation. They store this information in their national database. All affiliated insurers can view the information in this database.
People often think of serious crimes when they hear the word fraud, but it can also involve withholding information during the insurance application process. If you withhold information from the insurer and the insurer finds out, your insurance will be immediately terminated or denied.
The car has been uninsured in your name for too long can this happen?
Once a car is in your name, you are required by law to insure it at least for Third Party Liability. Even if you do not drive the car, it must be insured. If your car has been uninsured for more than 14 days, your car insurance may be refused as soon as you apply for it. Many insurance companies do not want to insure a car that should have been insured long ago.
Still insure your car via De Vereende
If you don't manage to get your car insured, this is of course very annoying. Perhaps you have already tried several companies, but are rejected every time. Fortunately, you can always turn to insurance company De Vereende. De Vereende was founded especially for insuring special risks. They have a broader acceptance policy than regular insurance companies and therefore insure risks that cannot be covered by regular insurance companies. However, the insurance premium will be considerably higher than with other companies.
We are an intermediary of De Vereende. This means that with us you can take out your car insurance with De Vereende. Moreover, we are the only place in the Netherlands where you can already calculate an indication of the premium.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a CIS registration?

Stichting CIS keeps track of all important insurance data, such as the number of claims or when someone has committed fraud. This database is accessible to all affiliated insurers and authorized agents.
What underwriting requirements does The Vereende apply?
The Vereende sets some conditions for taking out insurance
- You pay the premium at least 3 months in advance, even with monthly payments
- Insurance does not commence until the first premium AND a signed application form are received
- In most cases, De Vereende additionally charges a deposit of an average of € 175.00. This must be paid in advance. When there has been no damage at the end of the insurance, this amount will be refunded to you.
When can I get car insurance from a regular insurance company again?
As long as you are registered with CIS Foundation, chances are that a regular insurance company will not accept you. A CIS registration for non-payment usually stays for 3 to 5 years. This depends on the nature and severity of the situation. After this time, the CIS registration is automatically removed from the system. Once your CIS registration is removed again, you can take out insurance again with a regular insurance company.
