Is a car alarm required for my car?

Theft or burglary of your car is something you always want to prevent, of course. One of the things you can do yourself to secure your car is to install a car alarm. But which car insurance policy requires a car alarm? What risks do you run the moment your car alarm does not meet the insurer's requirement?

When is a car alarm for my car mandatory?

With car insurance with a single basic third-party coverage, the insurer will not require an alarm system. With a WA coverage there is no coverage for car theft and car burglary. This is different for car insurance with WA limited casco or WA All Risk coverage, where the insurer does assume the theft/burglary risk. In these cases, insurers may impose certain safety or alarm requirements.

There are several alarm requirements that an insurer may impose on your car. This depends on the make and type of car. Moreover, this still varies by insurer. For example, there may be specific alarm requirements if you own a car with a high list value. But there may also be alarm requirements for certain vintage cars, sporty cars or certain limited editions.

What if my car alarm does not meet the insurer's requirements?

When you purchase a immobilizer, car alarm and vehicle tracking system, you will receive a KIWA SCM (Foundation for Certification of Motor Vehicle Security ) certificate that is valid for three years. After that, you should have your car security checked every year at an authorized company in order to be reimbursed for any damage. Make sure your car meets modern alarm requirements. Insurers are increasingly demanding a properly secured car. A KIWA SCM certificate is proof of security. Should you want to claim damages from burglary or car theft on the car insurance, but the alarm requirements are NOT met, then an additional excess may be applied or even not paid out at all.

What type of alarm do I need for my car?

Which type of alarm system the insurer requires depends on several factors. The Kiwa SCM Foundation has divided the different types of alarm systems into five different security classes. Which security class your insurer requires depends on which car insurance you have. You can find this on the policy and clause sheet you received from your insurer.

What to do.

  1. Check your policy and clause sheet of your vehicle what alarm system is required for your car.
  2. Make sure your KIWA SCM certificate is renewed annually by an authorized company.
