Is car theft without a key reimbursed?

Being able to open, close and start your car without needing a car key to do so. Earlier, it was seen as a luxury option when buying a car. Nowadays, it is increasingly seen as theft-prone. When you own a car with keyless entry, good car insurance is essential. What about insurance if your keyless car is stolen and you are still in possession of the original keys?

Car thieves no longer need a key

A car with keyless entry is a car in which it is possible to start the car without a key. Not only can you start the car, opening and closing the car is also possible. When you approach the car with the key, the car automatically unlocks or unlocks the doors by touching the handle.

Car theft without a key

Car thieves can use a special receiver to pick up the signal from the key. This can be done even from outside a home. The car can be unlocked because the key's signal is nearby. In some cases, it is even possible to start the car this way while the keys are inside your home. As a result, car thieves no longer need a key to make off with your car.

To prevent theft of your car with keyless entry, there are a number of things you can do, namely:

  • Do not store the car key(s) within 6 meters of the outside wall. The signal from the key reaches up to 6 meters. The signal can be picked up by car thieves within these 6 meters.
  • Be sure to keep the key(s) in a steel/metal box or wrapped in aluminum foil when not in use.
  • It is often possible to disable the keyless entry system in your car's settings or have it blocked at your garage.

In addition, always check carefully that your car is locked and make sure it is properly secured.

Theft of your car without a key

Have you become a victim of theft of your car without a key? If so, it is important that you always report it to the police. Without a report, the insurance company will not process your claim.

If your car is stolen, third-party car insurance does not provide coverage whether or not you have the original keys.

If you have WA limited collisionor all-risk coverage, you can claim the theft on your car insurance policy. Normally, you must be able to produce 2 car keys in case of car theft. This is not a problem in this case, as your car was stolen without the car keys being used for this purpose.
However, insurers handle a car theft without keys differently. Want to know if your car insurance covers it? Check your policy terms and conditions to find out.
