Can I transfer car insurance to another name?

Car insurance is almost always taken out in the name of the owner of the car. Only in a few situations is it possible to take out car insurance in another name. But what about transferring car insurance to another name, for example, after the owner dies? Or when one person has to pay a higher premium than another, making transferring seem attractive? At Alpina.nl we explain.

Car insurance transfer after death

After the death, the next of kin have five weeks to decide what to do with the car. After this period, the car must be transferred into the name of the new owner, such as one of the next of kin. Not only must the license plate be transferred, but the car insurance must also be transferred. If the car is sold to someone else, it is a matter of transferring the license plate to the buyer's name and ending the car insurance. Transferring to another name changes a lot for car insurance. For example, the deceased's claim-free years are lost unless the car is transferred to the partner's name. The premium for car insurance may change, though, because the insurer will adjust the premium to the new owner. Therefore, it is always wise to check if you are not better off with another insurer.

Car insurance transfer to name other than car

It is almost never possible to simply transfer a car insurance policy to another name. In principle, car insurance must be taken out in the name of the license plate holder. The only exception is partners living at the same address.

Partner

Perhaps you used to drive most of the car, but nowadays it is your partner. With most insurer, it is possible to insure the car in your partner's name if your partner is the regular driver of the car. Even if you are the owner of the car. However, you must be registered at the same address. Remember that you yourself do not accrue any claim-free years if the car insurance is in your partner's name.

Children

Young drivers pay a lot more for their car insurance than older drivers. So your child will pay more for car insurance than you will. However, you are not allowed to transfer your child' s car insurance to your own name. However, you can add your child as a regular driver to your own car insurance policy. The insurance premium will still go up in that case.
