Where is my car insured?
On the RDW website, unfortunately, you can't see where and how your car is insured. The information about which car insurance you have can be found in other places. Log in to your insurer, grab your insurance policy document or green card (international insurance certificate). Or look in the mail, your e-mail or bank statement for information about your car insurance.
Found where your car is insured? Then immediately check whether the coverage still suits your needs. If necessary, adjust your insurance or switch to a cheaper car insurance.
What is the Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)?
The WAM is a law that requires owners and drivers of motor vehicles to have third-party liability (WA) insurance. This law applies to all motor vehicles on public roads in the Netherlands. At the RDW you do the WAM insurance check.
The consequences of no car insurance
Do you go on the road without insurance anyway? If so, this has (major) consequences the moment you are stopped by the police or cause damage.
Is your car not insured (yet) but you want to hit the road? Then quickly take out car insurance. This can be arranged within minutes. Most applications are also accepted immediately and you can immediately hit the road with provisional coverage.
Driving around in an uninsured car has the following consequences:
Fine from the RDW
The National Highway Administration keeps all kinds of data on cars, such as whether it has been MOT tested, sold or suspended, and whether the car has at least third-party insurance. Is your car not insured? Then you risk a fine of about €490. Even when your car is stationary. As soon as the license plate is in your name, the car must be insured. You can receive a fine for an uninsured car up to 3 times a year. Together this comes to €1200,- per year. A lot more than the insurance premium costs per year!
Police fine
Not only the RDW, but also the police can tell if a car is insured or not. Are you driving an uninsured car? Then you can get a hefty fine. You are obliged to carry the green card of your insurance company. This shows that the car is insured. The fine from the police is even higher than the fine from the RDW, namely €700. You can therefore receive a fine from the police in addition to the RDW fine.
Any damages you pay for yourself
Do you drive damage in an uninsured car? Then the repair costs are at your own expense. Repair costs on a car can be high, from a few hundred euros to thousands of euros. And that's just talking about damage to the car. If personal injury is involved, the costs can be much higher still. Not sure if your car is insured? Then always perform a car insurance check!
CIS registration
If you are involved in a collision with an uninsured car, you will receive a CIS registration. As a result, you run the risk that no car insurance company will accept you. You will soon end up with an insurance company that specializes in insuring special risks, but at a significantly higher premium than normal.
