Does hail damage affect my claim-free years?

A hailstorm can cause significant damage to your car. Even so much damage that you can no longer drive your car. In that case, you need to have your car repaired. Do you have a WA + limited casco or an all-risk car insurance? Then you are also insured for car damage caused by hail. Claiming damage to your car due to hailstones does not affect your claim-free years. Your claim-free years remain unchanged in case of hail damage.

Own risk

With only third-party coverage on your car insurance, you are unfortunately not insured for hail damage to your own car. You are then only insured for damage you cause to another person. If you have a WA + limited casco or all-risk car insurance, hail damage will be compensated by the insurer. Many insurers apply a deductible for hail damage to your car. How high the excess is, varies per insurer and can be found in the policy conditions of your insurance. With some insurers you pay no or a lower deductible if you have the hail damage repaired at an affiliated repair company. Your green card will show which repairers are affiliated with your insurer.

What to do in case of hail damage?

Do you have hail damage to your car? If so, you need to do two things:

  1. Contact your intermediary or insurer directly

The intermediary or your insurer can tell you whether you can have your car repaired and what you need to take care of. They can also tell you more about filling out the claim form.

  1. Take pictures of the damage

In addition, it is important to take clear pictures of the damage to your car. If possible, you can also photograph the hailstones that fell down. This will allow the insurer to see how big the hailstones were. Also include what time the car damage occurred. Your insurer or agent will review with you whether the hail damage to your car is insured and how the damage can be repaired.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years. You can read more about this new regulation in our blog post.
