What is a no claim protector?
When you take out a car insurance policy, you can additionally insure it with a no claims protector. A no claim protector is a means to keep your premium of your current car insurance at the same level and allows you to claim one damage each year. When you switch to another insurer this will have a negative effect on your premium. When using a no claim protector you lose a number of claim-free years. This is only a disadvantage when you switch to another insurer.
Car insurance with no claim protection
Have you taken out a car insurance with no claim protector? Then you can claim one claim per year without increasing your premium. When you have a car insurance with no claim protector, you will lose a number of claim-free years. This means that you will get less discount on the premium of your car insurance. Less claim-free years means less discount. However, this is only a disadvantage when you switch to another insurer. Your previous no claim protector does not count. Therefore you have to pay more premium when you switch to another car insurance.
Claim-free years are registered by the insurer in Roy-data. Roy-data is a central database in which insurers can see how many claim-free years you have built up. Insurers can also register the accrued years in Roy-data. Claims are also registered in Roy-data.
No claim protector or not
Do you have doubts about the supplementary no claims protector? The big advantage of no claim protection is the advantage on your premium with your current car insurer. There are also disadvantages to claiming damage annually.
A major disadvantage is that you lose years of claim-free travel and do not build up any new claim-free years. In addition, you will receive less no-claim discount if you switch to another insurer. This will probably make you less likely to switch to a cheaper insurer. And to take out a no claims protector you pay a higher premium.
In the bonus-malus ladder you can see how much discount you get. The number of claim-free years determines which step you start on. If you have built up many claim-free years through more than 10 years of accident-free driving and you are therefore at the top of the bonus-malus ladder, a no claim protector is not of much use to you. Claiming a damage does mean that you go back a few steps on the ladder, but with most car insurers the corresponding premium discount remains unchanged. Only in case of subsequent claims does it make sense to consider no claims protection.
For young drivers who have just received their driving licence, no claim protection can be attractive. Because they have been able to build up little to no discount, the premium rises considerably in the event of a claim. To avoid this surcharge, they may consider a no-claims protector.
Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022
Since 1 January 2022, claim-free years are transferable in certain situations. In case of death for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer the claim-free years. This way, they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
