How can you use claim-free years smartly?
Do you own or have owned multiple motor vehicles? Did you know you can save money by shuffling claim-free years? For example, you have accumulated 10 years in your motorcycle insurance and 3 claim-free years in your car insurance. You can also switch the claim-free years.
Claim-free years you have in your name, but as long as they are tied up in insurance you can't use them otherwise. You can remove the years from the insurance, but that only makes sense if you have a better use for them.
How does shuffling claim-free years give a discount?
Suppose you have an old motorcycle that you ride occasionally. The motorcycle is WA insured and you have accumulated 10 claim-free years. You pay only €15 per month for the insurance. In addition, you have a relatively new family car for which you have taken out third-party cascade insurance. This has only 3 claim-free years. The premium for this insurance is €45 per month. It is better to take out the years in the motorcycle insurance and use them again for the car insurance. This gives you a saving of €20 per month. Because of this action, the premium for the motorcycle insurance increases, but the increase is limited to a few euros.
Do you still have claim-free years available?
Have you terminated a motor insurance policy in recent years? Possibly you can make use of the claim-free years built up in the insurance. Whether this is the case can be seen on the most recently issued policy. Insurers are obliged to inform you of the number of claim-free years after termination of the insurance. Do not wait too long with this. After three years after termination of the insurance policy, insurers often no longer take accrued years into account.
How do I approach it?
You can file the request with the insurer. The question is whether the insurer will cooperate. After all, it is a major administrative operation. You can also do it differently. Compare the insurance policies and choose the insurer with the best proposal. Then you can cancel the existing insurance and you are in charge of the claim-free years. You can transfer the years in the motorcycle insurance to the car. Chances are that the benefit will be even higher than expected beforehand by comparing.
Taking advantage of the second car arrangement
Insuring a second family car can be inexpensive with the second car policy. You insure the second car with the insurer where the first car is also insured. When determining the discount in the second car insurance, the insurer then takes into account the years accrued in the first car insurance. Doesn't your first car's car insurance policy have a second car policy? A good reason to switch to another insurer. After all, the advantage is great.
Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022
Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
