Can you transfer claim-free years to another car?
Claim-free years are personal. This means that they are not accrued per car, but per person. Therefore, you only accrue claim-free years if there is a car insurance policy in your name. At some point you may buy another car. You may be wondering exactly how transferring claim-free years to another car works. In this article, we explain it to you!
Claim-free years are tied up in car insurance
Your accumulated claim-free years are fixed in a car insurance policy. At the moment you terminate the car insurance, the claim-free years are released and registered in Roy Data. Roy Data is the central database of the EPS Foundation (Efficient Processes Claims Insurers). If you then take out a new car insurance policy, your new insurer will consult the Roy Data database to see how many claim-free years you have. They can then use these for your new car insurance policy. Damage-free years accumulated with a car insurance that is still active are not yet registered in Roy Data. Therefore, these cannot be added to a new insurance policy either.
Transfer claim-free years to new car
If you have bought a new car, you will pass on the license plate number to your car insurance company. Your claim-free years will then automatically transfer to the new insurance policy. It is important to always report changes, such as a new vehicle, to the insurer. Do you want to switch to another insurer? Then you can terminate your current car insurance and take out a new one with the insurer of your choice. Your new car insurer will retrieve your claim-free years from Roy Data and link them to the new policy. This way you can easily transfer claim-free years to a new car.
Transfer claim-free years to second car
You can only use claim-free years for one car. Are you buying a second car? Then of course you want to take your claim-free years and accrued no-claim discount with you to your second car insurance. Some insurers therefore have a second car scheme. In the second car scheme, the discount is taken over from the first car, but the policies are not otherwise linked. Damage to one of the two cars will not affect the other car insurance policy.
Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022
Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
