Additional car insurance: what additional coverages are there?

In addition to auto insurance, you can choose to purchase additional policies. Which ones can you choose and what is the function? Not all supplements are always advisable. Double insurance should be avoided. Only take additional coverage on your car insurance if it really adds value.

Insuring yourself and your passengers

In auto insurance, you insure liability for damage done with the car. Optionally, you can also insure damage to your own car. There are two additional insurances that can ease the financial suffering for you and your passengers in the event of an accident.

Accidental occupant insurance

An accident can result in serious injury or death. Accidental occupant insurance provides lump sum compensation in the event of personal injury. This is a payment in the event of permanent disability and death of the driver and/or passengers. You can partly determine the amount. In case of disability, the benefit is not sufficient to make up for the loss of income due to the disability. Most policies involve a benefit of tens of thousands to about one hundred thousand euros. In the event of death, a lower amount is insured. Basically, you can decide how many people you want to insure.

How many people are insured?

Basically, you can decide how many people you want insured. You can co-insure as many occupants as there are seat belts in the vehicle. Normally, four occupants are insured on accident or claims passenger insurance.

Accidental occupant insurance: too few people, now what?

If you have 4 people insured on an accident passenger insurance policy, but there are 5 people in a vehicle in an accident, the fifth person is automatically insured. However, the company will then pay out less. It divides the benefit that would be given to 4 persons among 5 persons. It is therefore advisable to report the correct number of people.

Indemnity insurance for occupants

This insurance is more expensive than accident passenger insurance, but the coverage is also much broader. In addition to payment for personal injury, this insurance pays for property damage resulting from an accident. For example, there is coverage for damage to passengers' belongings. In terms of personal injury, passenger indemnity insurance is also much broader. Both the driver and passengers are paid for the actual damages suffered. Suppose a passenger becomes disabled due to a car accident. From the passenger indemnity insurance follows a payment where the injured person is fully compensated. Permanent disability can involve hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No-claim protection

The no-claims protector allows you to protect the discount built up in the car insurance. If you choose this additional insurance, you can claim once on the car insurance without it being at the expense of the accumulated discount. The claim on the insurance does reduce the number of claim-free years, but the discount is artificially maintained. Do you switch to another insurer? Then the advantage expires. This is because the new insurer uses the claim-free years actually accrued.

Protecting rights with supplemental insurance

You may also choose to protect your rights with insurance that provides legal help. This additional insurance is not recommended in all cases.

Breakdown assistance

Breakdown assistance after an accident is covered as standard in your car insurance policy. More and more insurers want to go a step further by also offering roadside assistance as an addition to the car insurance. This coverage you can for example also expand with roadside assistance abroad. Make sure you are not double insured for roadside assistance. For new cars, there is often a similar service from the car brand.

Recourse legal expenses insurance

In some situations, you have to make your claim to the person who caused the damage. Normally, this is not necessary with the most comprehensive WA casco insurance. The insurer will pay for the damage to your car itself. If your car is WA or WA limited casco insured, recovering your damages from the other party is not insured. For this you can take out legal assistance insurance. After damage, the insurer will take care of recovering your damages.

Legal expenses insurance for motor vehicles

This insurance also takes care of recovering damages from the person who caused them, but the coverage is broader than recourse legal expenses insurance. You can also use the insurance in a dispute with a car dealer, for example, or a disagreement with the garage over repair costs. You can even use this insurance for legal help for criminal prosecution due to an accident. However, there may be specific requirements for using the motor vehicle legal expenses insurance.
