Why convert car insurance to another coverage?
When buying car insurance, you can choose between three different coverages. For new cars, the most comprehensive third-party cascade insurance is the most logical option. For old cars, third-party car insurance is often chosen. Which coverage is the best choice depends on several factors.
By tailoring car insurance coverage to best suit your personal situation and car, you can save a lot of money. First, we will explain the standard coverages and then we will give you guidance on how to select the coverage that is a good fit for you and your car.
Third-party insurance
This coverage is mandatory. In case of damage inflicted with the car, this car insurance can be called upon to compensate the damage caused to third parties. In case of damage, the other party can directly address your insurer to compensate the damage. Your own damages cannot be recovered from the insurance.
WA limited casco
With a fault damage, only the damage for which you are liable is compensated by the auto insurer. Your own damages will only be compensated in certain cases mentioned in the policy. These include coverage for:
- Theft of the car
- Window Break
- Hail damage
- Fire damage
WA casco
The WA-casco car insurance (all risks) is the most comprehensive and also the most expensive form of insurance. In addition to the coverage as in the other two forms, this insurance also pays for your own damages. Vandalism and damage caused by an unknown perpetrator are also compensated by the insurer. A damage caused by another, the insurer also pays out. The damage is then recovered by the insurer from the perpetrator.
Which form of insurance is the best choice?
This seems like a simple question, but the opposite is true. For new cars up to six years old, it is wise to choose the WA-casco car insurance. This is because the premium is based on the new-for-old value. For older cars, the premium is relatively too high. In case of damage, the premium is based on the current value. Nevertheless, there is a case for WA-casualty insurance for cars older than six years. Especially if you have already accumulated several claim-free years.
An illustrative example
You own a 2007 VW Golf with a daily value of about €8,000. Based on the age of the car, third-party insurance no longer seems logical. You have accumulated 8 claim-free years. How can you best insure the car? From our calculation tool shows that the premium for a third-party comprehensive insurance is €30 per month.
For the WA limited casco car insurance the premium comes to €17,50 and for the WA to €13,50 per month with the cheapest insurer. For an extra amount of respectively €12.50 and €16.50 per month you can prevent that your car of €8,000 will not be compensated in case of damage caused by you. So in this case it is certainly worth choosing the WA-casco car insurance despite the age of the car.
What happens in case of damage if the car is not WA-casco insured?
In the event of an accident, with the more limited coverages, you will not be paid your own damages. In case it is a recoverable loss, the party causing the loss must be held liable. You must then arrange this yourself.
