How high is the excess of my car insurance?
When buying car insurance, the term "deductible" is bound to come up. How high the deductible of your car insurance is, you largely determine yourself. With a third party liability insurance you almost never have a deductible, because with this type of insurance no damage to your own car is insured. For certain risks an insurer can still decide to apply an excess. With the other coverages you usually have a deductible, but how high is this and what determines it?
What is the excess for a car insurance?
You can choose to have a higher deductible. You will then pay less premium per month. This way you can quickly save tens to hundreds of euros per year on your car insurance. When comparing car insurance you can pay attention to the amount of the deductible compared to the premium per month. After all, it is a big risk you take, since you can never predict in advance whether you will cause damage to your car.
A higher deductible also means that in case of damage, you will have to pay a higher amount yourself. The rest of the claim amount, which remains after deducting your deductible, will be paid out by the insurer. If you have a damage amount of €2500,- and a deductible of €300,- the payment from the insurer will be €2500,- minus €300,- (your deductible) = €2200,-.
Please note: For windscreen damage, other rules often apply regarding the excess.
With leased cars, the amount of the excess is included in the contract. When entering into such a contract, therefore, pay close attention to the arrangement in case of damage. How much deductible will you be charged? The amount of the deductible in case of damage varies per provider.

So the amount of the deductible is, to a large extent, up to you. However, most insurers work with a standard deductible. This amount is usually between €130 and €150. There are even some insurers who do not apply a deductible. In addition, you can sometimes buy off the deductible. Then the insurer will pay the entire amount of the damage. You then pay a higher premium per month, but you do not have to pay any deductible in case of damage. Usually, you can only buy off the deductible with car insurance with all-risk coverage.
