What does it cost to charge an electric car?
Are you considering purchasing an electric car? If so, it is a good idea to take a look at all the cost items. It is often thought that electric cars are more expensive to drive than gasoline cars. In practice, however, this is not so bad. The purchase of an electric car is often more expensive, but the monthly costs are actually lower. With an electric car, of course, you don't have gasoline costs, but energy costs. But what does charging an electric car actually cost? At Alpina.nl we figured it out for you.
Cost of charging electric car
Whereas the price of gasoline is determined in part by the price of oil and excise taxes, this is obviously not the case with electricity. The cost of charging an electric car depends mainly on the method of charging. You can charge your electric car in three ways: via a quick charger, a public charging station or a charging station at your home. We briefly explain the difference in costs.
Fast charging how much does that actually cost?
Ideally, you probably want your car charged as soon as possible. Especially if you drive it a lot. However, fast charging is not only the fastest, but also the most expensive charging method. The cost is often between €0.25 and €0.79 per kWh, depending on the provider. With some providers, you can also take out a subscription. With a subscription, you pay a fixed amount per month, which means you pay less per kWh. Most fast chargers charge your car's battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 40 minutes. Fast chargers are usually located along the highway.
What is the cost of charging at home?
Costs are lowest when charging the electric car at home. With a public charging point, the use and maintenance of the charging station are also included in the price per kWh. With home charging, you only pay the electricity rate per kWh that is in your energy contract. You then pay the kilowatt-hour price directly to your own energy supplier. In 2021, the price is about €0.23. With a home charging station, you do, of course, face installation costs. The cost of installing a charging station depends on several factors, such as the purchase price of the pole, the type of connection and the distance between the meter box and the charging station. The average cost for installing a charging station is about €2000. This is obviously a hefty investment, but it certainly pays for itself because you pay a lot less per kWh.
Public charging station cheaper?
With a public charging station, you pay more per kWh, again this varies by provider. Currently the prices are between €0.20 and €0.60 per kWh. The reason you pay more with a public charging station than with a home charging station is that the provider of the station also has to provide costs for construction and maintenance. Moreover, they also want to make some profit. Previously, there was often quite a bit of ambiguity about the price per kWh at a public charging station. As of July 1, 2021, however, there is new legislation that requires providers to release clear information about tariffs. It must be immediately clear on the charging station what the rate is. Moreover, this information is also shared with price comparison apps and navigation apps. So you will know in advance what the charging rate is, whether the charging point is free and how fast charging can be done.
What does it cost to charge an electric car with solar panels?
Do you have solar panels on your home? Then you can use the energy generated to charge your electric car. This works as follows: in the summer months you naturally generate more power than in the winter months. Surplus power you can therefore supply back to the power company. At the end of the year, the returned power is deducted from your electricity consumption. You then pay only the number of kWh remaining. This is called the net-metering scheme. Of course, your electric car is charged with power from the grid, but because you generate more than you used, you can feed it back and the two amounts are offset against each other.
Please note that starting in 2023, the balancing scheme will be slowly phased out. This means that each year you will receive less back for the excess power you generate and feed back to the power company.
