When are snow chains mandatory?

Snow chains compulsory in Germany
In Germany, cars and motorhomes must be adapted to winter conditions. This means that winter tyres are compulsory. Snow chains are compulsory. Snow chains are compulsory in Germany if there is a blue sign showing a car tyre with a snow chain. The maximum speed is 50 kilometres per hour.
Snow chains compulsory in Austria
Also in Austria, snow chains are compulsory when there is a blue sign indicating that snow chains are compulsory. There may be a caption indicating which vehicles are subject to the obligation.
Snow chains compulsory in France
In France, snow chains may be used only on snow-covered roads. On some mountain passes, snow chains are compulsory. Here, too, this is indicated by the blue signs.
Snow chains compulsory in Switzerland
In Switzerland, snow chains are compulsory depending on the condition of the road during the period 1 November to 30 April. This is also indicated here by special signs.
