Green card digital application
In principle, you do not need to request a green card from the insurer. In fact, you get it automatically after taking out car insurance. Nowadays, the green card is usually available digitally. You can download and print it yourself. Most insurers no longer send you the green card by mail, but send it by e-mail. It is also often possible to download the card via your personal environment on the insurer's website. In principle, a green card is valid for one year. However, most green cards are valid for 13 months. When renewing the insurance, you will automatically be sent a new green card by the insurer.

Have you lost your green card? If so, you can request a new one from the insurer. They will most likely send it to you via e-mail. However, nowadays a green card is also available digitally. You can often log into your personal area on the insurer's website to view, download or print the green card. This way you always have access to your green card.

Do I need to carry my green card with me at all times?
In the Netherlands it is not obligatory to have your green card with you when you drive your car. However, it is handy to have the green card with you because it also contains all your insurance information and the phone numbers to call in case of damage or breakdown. However, this does not necessarily have to be a paper green card; it can also be a digital version, such as a screenshot or PDF file of the green card. Some European countries do require you to carry a paper green card. Here, a digital version is not valid. This is in Albania, Bosnia (and Herzegovina), Israel, Iran, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Macedonia and Belarus.
