Where is the policy number on the green card?

When you purchase auto insurance, you will receive a policy number from the insurer. This policy number is linked to your insurance policy. After taking out the insurance, you will also receive a green card from your insurer. A green card is an international proof of insurance, with which you can prove that your car is insured. The green card contains the most important information about your car insurance, such as the insured registration number, the period for which the car is insured, in which countries the car is insured, the card number and the insurer's contact information. Your policy number is also listed on your green card, but where exactly? In this article, we explain it to you.

What is the policy number auto insurance?

When you purchase auto insurance, you will be assigned a policy number. A policy number is a personal, unique code under which the insurer or intermediary registers your car insurance. Your insurance policy number is also always on the policy sheet you receive from the insurer. You will need the policy number when changing things around your car insurance, when reporting damage or when canceling the insurance. The policy number is also on your green card and is also part of the green card number.

Difference between policy number and green card number

The policy number and the green card number are two different numbers. However, your policy number is part of the green card number. The green card number is on your green card and consists of 3 parts: the policy number of your car insurance, the insurer code and the code of the country you live in. Together, these three parts make up the green card number. When filling out a European claim form, always enter the green card number.

Where exactly is the policy number on the green card?

You will find the green card number under item 4 Country Code/Code insurer/Number on your green card. Below that is the green card number, which looks like this:

  • First the country code, the letters NL
  • After this, there are 3 digits. This is the insurer code
  • Last comes your car insurance policy number. This is a longer string of numbers

So although the green card number is almost the same as the policy number, it is not quite the same.
