How can I check my registration code?
To transfer, scrap, export, trade-in or suspend your car, you need a registration code. In addition, it must be a valid combination of registration certificate and registration code. Are you in doubt whether you have the right registration code with the registration card, or perhaps the other way around? Then you can check the combination of the registration card (the document number) and the registration code. On Alpina.nl you can read how to do this exactly.
Checking registration code through the RDW
You can check your registration code through the RDW. Checking a combination of registration card and registration code is completely free. You can follow the following steps.
- Go to "Check document number and registration code.
- Enter the document number of the registration card. This is on the front of the card.
- Enter the registration code
- Then you will immediately see if the combination is valid
You can stop by clicking close, or you can check another combination right away.
What should I do if the combination is incorrect?
If the combination of the registration card and registration code is not valid, you can check separately whether the registration certificate is valid. To do this, you can enter the document number on the RDW website. If it appears that it is not valid, you can request a temporary document number or a replacement registration certificate.
If it turns out that the registration code is incorrect, you can request a new code. To request a new registration code, go to "Lost registration code" on the RDW website. Here you can log in with your DigiD. Then select the vehicle for which you want to request a new code. The cost for a new code is €1, which you can pay via iDeal. Then you will immediately receive an e-mail from RDW with a link to your new registration code. Download it immediately and save it. The link to the code remains available for 40 days.
If you want to register the car for scrapping, you can request a disassembly code.
Lost registration code: now what?
Have you lost the letter with the second part of the registration code? Or you only find out when you are transferring or suspending the car that you can no longer find the code? No problem. If you have lost the registration code, you can request a new one through the RDW. You are not the only one who loses the registration code: according to the RDW, about 200,000 new registration codes are requested every year. When a vehicle changes hands, the registration code is also frequently lost. This is especially annoying if you were just about to register the car. Fortunately, you can immediately download a new registration code if you log in with your DigiD.
