I lost my registration code: what should I do?
When you have a license plate transferred to your name, you will receive the registration code. The registration code consists of 9 digits. You will receive the first part of the code during the registration process, as it is stated on the registration certificate. The second part of the code is in the letter you will receive from RDW a few days later, together with your registration certificate. Why is the registration code important?
If you are happy with your car and just using it, you do not need to have the registration code handy. However, there are some situations where you will need the registration code. For example, this is when you are going to:
- Sell
- Demolish
- Suspend
- Trade-in
- Execute
If you sell the car and transfer the registration number to another owner's name, you must use the registration code to prove that you are indeed the owner of the car. Without the registration code, you cannot register the car.
Lost registration code: should I apply for a new one?
Have you lost the letter with the second part of the registration code? Or you only find out when you are transferring or suspending the car that you can no longer find the code? No problem. If you have lost the registration code, you can request a new one through the RDW. You are not the only one who loses the registration code: according to the RDW, about 200,000 new registration codes are requested every year. When a vehicle changes hands, the registration code is also frequently lost. This is especially annoying if you were just about to register the car. Fortunately, you can immediately download a new registration code when you log in with your DigiD. This means you don't have to wait days for the new code to arrive in the mail.
How to request a new registration code?
Applying for a new registration code is done through the RDW website. You can follow the following steps when applying.
- Go to 'Lost car registration code' and log in using the 'Download registration code directly' button
- Log in with your DigiD.
- Pay the cost of €1 with iDeal
- You will then receive two emails from the RDW. The second email contains the link to your new registration code
The new registration code remains for 40 days. Therefore, download it immediately and save it properly. Once you have your new registration code, the old code is no longer valid.
