All about the gray license plate
A car with a gray license plate is a car with a tax advantage. You get this benefit if you are so registered with the RDW. What must your car meet for the tax benefit? And can you convert a car to a gray license plate yourself? We list it for you.
A car with a gray license plate offers advantages. You get a discount on motor vehicle taxes and when you buy the car, you do not owe BPM. So this gives a significant savings on taxation. When insuring a car with a gray license plate, we can help you. Compared to a passenger car, there are fewer insurers offering insurance solutions, but comparison pays off.
What is a gray license plate?
The name suggests that you can recognize cars with this license plate by the color of the license plate, but that is not the case. In most cases, these are vans, vans or cars with an open body with a license plate beginning with the letter "B" or "V." The designation comes from the color of the former registration certificate Part 1. Due to overly broad regulations, private individuals also drove gray license plate cars in the past, but this has been countered. It is now mainly entrepreneurs. The disabled can also own a gray license plate car under conditions.
What does a gray license plate car need to meet?
The requirements the car must meet differ for each type of transportation vehicle. Different requirements apply to a large van than to a car with an open cargo box or a van with a raised roof, for example. The requirements cover:
- The size of the cargo area. For a large van, the cargo area must be at least 2 meters long.
- Side windows. Are they allowed and how much maximum?
- Mandatory fixed wall or not?
- Additional requirements. For example, no benches may be placed behind the front seats.
See the list of requirements for vans on the Internal Revenue Service website.
In addition, there are requirements for owners (business owners and the disabled). The owner must be an entrepreneur for sales tax purposes and must also have a VAT number. The van is in the name of the entrepreneur or company. In addition, the car must be used for more than 10% of the kilometers driven annually for business purposes. For the disabled, among other things, it is required that they depend on the car in question for transportation.

Frequently asked questions about the gray license plate
Which cars have gray license plates?
The range of gray license plate cars is wide. In fact, existing cars can be converted to meet the requirements. The most common gray license plate cars:
- Delivery vans with or without open bodies
- Vans with raised roofs
- Terrain cars
- Vans
How much do you spend on road tax?
The road tax (=motor vehicle tax) is lower for cars with gray license plates. Business owners receive a discount on the rate, so to speak. However, there are conditions to qualify for this discount. These correspond to the conditions for eligibility for a gray license plate. The disabled may also be entitled to a road tax discount. For vans aged 30 years or older, you can get exemption from road tax. You can also get exemption for electrically powered cars with a gray license plate. In that case, there is a zero rate.
You can calculate the amount of the motor vehicle tax on the website of the tax authorities. Under the option 'Select the type of motor vehicle' you can choose 'Company van'.
What about the BPM of a car with a gray license plate?
The abbreviation BPM stands for Tax on Passenger Cars and Motor Vehicles. When you buy a motor vehicle, you pay this tax to the tax authorities. When importing a car, you also have to pay this tax. A company does not have to settle the BPM. In the past, the BPM amount had to be pre-financed, but that is no longer necessary today. The refund scheme has been replaced by an exemption. Which is nice for entrepreneurs. If sold within 5 years, the exemption can be passed on to the next entrepreneur.
What does it cost to convert to a gray license plate?
There are companies that specialize in converting cars with yellow license plates. If you are looking for a new car, you can go straight for a car with a gray license plate. For young cars with yellow license plates, in some cases it may make sense to convert the vehicle. By tuning the car to meet the requirements for a gray license plate, you can still take advantage of the tax benefits. Of course, the tax benefit must outweigh the cost of converting the car. There is little we can say about the level of costs. Conversion may consist of window blinding, but rebuilding the cargo box may also be necessary.
