What types of registration certificates are there?
The registration certificate is the passport (means of identification) of a vehicle. The registration certificate consists of a number of documents containing information about the vehicle and its owner. Due to European regulations, the registration certificate was renewed as of June 1, 2004. The names of the registration parts changed and some items were added to the registration certificate.
Registration certificate as of Jan. 1, 2014
From January 1, 2014, there will be a new registration certificate in the Netherlands. The paper registration certificate (part IA, IB and part II) will then be replaced by a credit card-sized registration certificate (the registration card) and a registration code. With the advent of the new one-volume registration certificate, sweeping changes are also taking place in the vehicle registration process and the registration of vehicles. The owner/holder of a vehicle does not have to do anything themselves to obtain the registration card, but will receive it when purchasing a new or used vehicle. If you want to switch to the new license plate sooner, you can apply for a replacement license plate through the website of the National Road Administration (RDW). The owner/holder of the vehicle will then receive by mail the new registration card with the corresponding registration code. Upon receipt of these documents, the paper copy can be destroyed, it is then no longer valid.
The registration certificate until June 1, 2004
- Part I, the vehicle data section
- Part II, the part with the registration information
- Transfer certificate (called Copy Part III before 01-01-2005), the part required when transferring the registration certificate and which you must keep at home.
The registration certificate as of June 1, 2004
As of June 1, the new proof consists of only the following two parts:
Part I
- Part IA - Vehicle License
- Part IB - registration certificate
So this new volume consists of several pages, but these together make up the new complete Volume I.
Part II
This is the transfer certificate. This part is needed when transferring the registration certificate and you must keep it at home. You must have both the vehicle registration certificate (Part I or Part IA) and the registration certificate (Part II or Part IB) with you when using the vehicle on public roads. The police may ask for them.
Combinations
When a vehicle is transferred to a new owner's name, only a new registration certificate (Part IB) is issued. The following combinations of registration certificates are then possible:
- Part I with a Copy Part III from before June 1, 2004 with a new registration certificate (Part IB)
- Part I with a transfer certificate dated before June 1, 2004 with a new registration certificate (Part IB)
You must have the following parts with you when using public roads:
- The vehicle certificate (Part 1A or 1).
- The registration certificate (Part 1B or Part II).
