What types of registration certificates are there?
The vehicle registration certificate is the passport (means of identification) of a vehicle. The registration certificate consists of a number of documents that contain information about the vehicle and its owner. Due to European regulations, the registration certificate was renewed on 1 June 2004. The names of the registration parts have changed and some items have been added to the registration certificate.
Registration certificate from 1 January 2014
A new registration certificate will be introduced in the Netherlands as of 1 January 2014. The paper vehicle registration certificate (part IA, IB and part II) will be replaced by a vehicle registration certificate in credit card format (the vehicle card) and a registration code. With the arrival of the new single-piece registration certificate, there will also be drastic changes in the registration process and the registration of vehicles. The owner/holder of a vehicle does not have to do anything to obtain the registration card, but will receive it upon purchase of a new or used vehicle. If you would like to switch to the new registration certificate sooner, you can apply for a replacement certificate via the website of the National Vehicle Authority (RDW). The owner/holder of the vehicle will then receive the new registration card and the corresponding registration code by post. After receiving these documents, the paper copy can be destroyed as it is no longer valid.
The registration certificate until 1 June 2004
- Part I, the part with the vehicle data
- Part II, the part containing the registration data
- Transfer certificate (before 01-01-2005 called Copy Part III), the part that is required when transferring the registration certificate and that you should keep at home.
The registration certificate as of 1 June 2004
As of 1 June, the new proof consists of only the following two parts:
Part I
- Part IA - Vehicle licence
- Part IB - Registration certificate
This new section therefore consists of several pages, but together they form the new complete Part I.
Part II
This is the certificate of registration. This part is required when transferring the registration certificate and must be kept at home. You must have both the vehicle registration certificate (Part I or Part IA) and the registration certificate (Part II or Part IB) with you when you use the vehicle on public roads. The police may ask for them.
Combinations
When transferring a vehicle to the name of a new owner, only a new registration certificate (Part IB) is issued. The following combinations of registration certificates are possible:
- Part I with a copy Part III dating from before 1 June 2004 with a new registration certificate (Part IB)
- Part I with a transfer certificate dated before 1 June 2004 with a new registration certificate (Part IB)
You must have the following items with you when using public roads:
- The vehicle licence (Part 1A or 1)
- The registration certificate (Part 1B or Part II)
