Road tax check
Are you going to buy a new car? Then beforehand you are probably looking not only at the purchase value of the car, but also at the monthly costs such as car insurance and road tax. Therefore, it is wise to do a road tax check in advance. That way you will know exactly what you will soon spend on road tax for your new car. Several factors are important when doing a road tax check. In this article, we will explain them to you!
License plate road tax check
Road tax is calculated by license plate number. The license plate number contains a lot of information about the car. This is necessary for calculating the road tax because there are a number of factors that affect the amount, namely:
- The type of motor vehicle
- The weight of the vehicle
- The fuel
- How environmentally polluting the vehicle is
- What province you live in
Based on the license plate, it can be seen what type of vehicle it is, how heavy it is and what fuel it uses. With the license plate number, the necessary data about the car are retrieved from the RDW.
Road tax calculation without license plate
Don't have the car's registration number on hand? You can also calculate the road tax without the license plate number. In that case you have to enter the data manually. Think for example of the car make, the model and type of car, the month and year of construction and the type of fuel the car uses.
The type of fuel has a major impact on road tax. Gasoline is taxed the least and is therefore a lot cheaper in road tax than a diesel car. For an all-electric car, you pay no road tax at all. This applies until 2024. With this, the central government wants to encourage fully electric driving.
Finally, you indicate whether it is a manual or automatic car. Based on this information, you can calculate the road tax for a car even without a license plate.
Road tax table 2025
The cost of road tax can vary from province to province. This is because of the provincial surcharges. Provincial surcharge is the portion of the road tax that goes to the provinces. Provinces set the rate for the provincial surcharge each year. However, there is a certain maximum attached to it. Because of this, the cost of tax can sometimes vary considerably from province to province. Below is the table showing the cost per province for road tax in 2025.
The table below shows the percentage of provincial surcharges for each province.
