Transferring a car to your name

If you've bought a new car, you need to transfer the vehicle's registration number to your name. We call this transfer. You do this together with the selling party. Is the license plate in your name? Then you must fulfill all vehicle obligations: take out car insurance, fulfill the MOT obligation and pay motor vehicle taxes.

How does a car registration work?

Transferring a car is done through the RDW. You choose whether to arrange the transfer online or prefer to have it done on site at a location.

You'll need this:

To transfer a car, you need a number of documents:

  • A complete registration certificate: the registration card and the registration code.
  • Either the original registration certificate (part 1B) and the transfer certificate.
  • A valid proof of identity: driver's license, passport or ID card.

After the registration, you will receive a registration report with the first 4 digits of the new registration code. You will also receive a release certificate. You give this to the seller. This certificate shows that the seller is no longer responsible for the vehicle.

Has the car been transferred? Then you must comply with all vehicle regulations. The RDW checks in the insurance register whether you have car insurance. They also check in the inspection register whether the car is APK-approved. The Tax Office checks whether the road tax for the car has been paid.

Cost of transferring a car

The cost of transferring a car is €13.10 in 2025. The cost is the same everywhere. So it makes no difference whether you choose to transfer the car online or prefer to do so at a license plate counter, RDW location or PostNL location. The only difference is that when you transfer a car online, you pay the cost via iDEAL.

Car registration online

Transferring a car online is done through the RDW website. You must then perform a one-time identity check of your proof of identity. You do this with the DigiD app on your cell phone.

To transfer a car online, follow these steps:

  1. On the RDW website, choose the option "Transfer vehicle.
  2. Pay the transfer fee via iDEAL.
  3. After the transfer, you will receive 2 emails from the RDW. You will first receive a confirmation of receipt and then the final confirmation of the transfer. The car is not transferred until you receive the final confirmation via e-mail.
  4. Then you receive a third e-mail from RDW with the link to the indemnification certificate and the registration report. You give the indemnification certificate to the seller and you keep the registration report. The registration report also contains part 1 of the registration code.
  5. By mail you will then receive the registration certificate and part 2 of the registration code.

Car registration at a license plate counter, RDW location or PostNL location

Rather have your car registered at a location? This is possible at various locations throughout the Netherlands. DigiD is not required.

    1. Go to a license plate counter, PostNL location, RDW inspection station or RDW counter near you
    2. Make sure you have the registration card and the registration code or the original registration certificate (part 1B) and the transfer certificate with you. Also bring valid identification.
    3. Pay the transfer fee.
    4. At the counter, the employee will give you a registration report with the first 4 digits of the registration code and the indemnification certificate. You give the indemnification certificate to the seller and keep the registration certificate.
    5. By mail you will then receive the registration certificate and part 2 of the registration code.

Who is allowed to transfer a car?

A car can be transferred by someone 18 years of age or older with a valid Dutch identity document (passport, ID card or driver's license) and an address in the Netherlands. The buyer must be present at the transfer in person or authorize someone with RDW authorization.

Companies can transfer a car with an excerpt from the Chamber of Commerce and a valid ID of the person in charge.

Transferring your car over the weekend

Transferring a car on Saturday or Sunday is usually not a problem. Nowadays, you can find a PostNL location with an RDW counter in more and more places, such as supermarkets. These are also open on weekends and often have longer opening hours than regular stores.

Registering a car after death

If the owner of the car dies, the license plate must be transferred to a new owner's name within 5 weeks. The process of transferring a car after death is basically the same as normal.

Car insurance after transferring a car

As soon as the license plate is in your name, you must take out car insurance. In the Netherlands, by law, you must have at least third-party insurance for your vehicle. This means you are insured for damage you cause to others. Damage to your own car is not covered. For this you can choose a more extensive insurance such as WA + limited casco or Allrisk.

No car insurance has major consequences

If you forget to insure your car right away, you could face a large fine if you are checked. The cost is even higher if you cause an accident with an uninsured car. Especially if someone is injured or dies.

If you cause damage, the costs can still be fairly limited in the case of eye damage. With injury, the cost can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. You could end up paying for your whole life if you don't insure your car. So make sure you get insurance in time.

Report code is on the registration report

To purchase car insurance, you need the car's report code. This is a unique code and consists of the last 4 digits of your car's chassis number. The report code can be found on the registration report you received after you transferred the car. It is also on the registration card you receive from the RDW after the registration.

Frequently asked questions about transferring a car

Where can I get a car registered?

Transferring a car goes through the RDW. You choose whether to register the car online or at a license plate counter, RDW testing station, RDW desk or PostNL location near you. Often you do this together with the seller of the car.

Why do I need to transfer a car?

You must transfer a car to transfer legal ownership from the seller to the buyer. This is mandatory so that you, the new owner, become responsible for insurance, taxes and any fines. Without a transfer, the previous owner remains legally responsible for the car.

I have lost the registration code, registration code or registration card

If you have lost your registration code, registration code or registration card, you can request a new one through the RDW. This can be done online with your DigiD or in writing. Please note that there are costs involved.
