What is the certificate of clearance for when a car is taken to the scrapyard?
The vehicle release document shows that the vehicle is no longer registered in your name. If you have sold your car, you can use the vehicle release document to prove that you no longer have to meet the vehicle obligations. Are you going to scrap the car? Then you will also receive a certificate of indemnification. We tell you what a certificate of indemnification is for when scrapping a car and how you can get one.
Scrapping the car at a company recognised by the RDW
If you want to scrap your car, you can only do so at a dismantling company recognised by the RDW. You recognise a dismantling company recognised by the RDW by its white and orange logo that says 'RDW approved dismantling of vehicles'. On the RDW website, you will also find a list of all the recognised companies. After dismantling, the dismantling company ensures that your registration in the RDW licence plate register is terminated, so that the car's registration number is no longer in your name.
Why is a certificate of clearance important when scrapping a car?
As soon as the car has been scrapped and the registration number has been suspended, you no longer have to meet the vehicle requirements, such as the MOT, road tax and taking out car insurance. The car is then scrapped. However, you do need a certificate of release from liability to prove this. That is why a certificate of indemnification is also important when you have your car scrapped.
How does the demolition of a car go?
If you want to scrap your car, follow these steps:
- Make an appointment with a dismantling company recognised by the RDW
- Bring the complete registration certificate or card with the registration code to the scrapyard
- The employee will register your vehicle with the RDW and will also give you a certificate of clearance
- Your registration in the RDW licence plate register has now ended. Please make sure that you stop the car insurance yourself. The motor vehicle tax stops automatically. The MOT obligation also ends.
