How should I register a caravan?

If you have purchased a caravan weighing more than 750 kg, you, as the new owner, must transfer your caravan's registration number. Not every caravan needs to be transferred. Only those weighing 750 kilograms or more must be registered in your name. So have you purchased a new or second-hand caravan of such weight and changed owners? Then registration is necessary. Only when this is done can one speak of a new owner.

In terms of insurance, only the towing vehicle needs to be insured, as the caravan is automatically co-insured on your third-party vehicle insurance. However, it is still wise to take out caravan insurance.

Can I transfer a caravan online?

You can arrange for the registration at various places, such as the municipality, PostNL locations and RDW-approved auto garages. You can also arrange the registration yourself online. On the RDW website you can easily arrange the transfer yourself online. However, you will need to have your DigiD login details and an Android smartphone for the app 'RDA scanner'. The online transfer will follow on its own.

On the RDW site you choose 'vehicle registration' and log in with your DigiD data. Then you need to scan the QR code with your phone, after which there is an additional verification scan of your ID. Then you will enter the RDW's online transfer service. Once the amount due has been paid, the transfer is successful and you will receive by email a link to the indemnification certificate and the registration report. You will receive the registration card and the second part of the registration code by mail a few working days later.

What do I need to register my caravan?

To transfer your caravan, you can go to various companies and locations on weekdays. Nowadays you can often even go to various locations on weekends. Be sure to check in advance for Saturday and Sunday opening hours.

What do you need to bring to register your caravan? First, you must bring valid identification. In order to register a vehicle, you must be 18 years of age or older. In addition, it is important that you bring the registration card and the registration code. The registration code consists of two parts and can be found on the registration report and the letter you received from RDW together with the registration card. This code replaces the old registration papers and should be kept in a safe place. This is because you will need it again when you sell or trade in the caravan, for example. Did you buy the caravan second-hand from a private person? Then it is advisable to arrange the registration with the seller. He or she must receive the indemnification certificate, as this is proof that the owner has changed hands.
