What is the deductible with caravan insurance?

When you take your caravan on vacation, you want to enjoy your vacation or weekend getaway without any worries. Then it is also important to make sure that your caravan is properly insured against damage and that you do not have to pay too much for it either. When taking out caravan insurance, you will have to deal with a deductible. What is the deductible and how high is it? Excess with caravan insurance means in short that in case of damage to your caravan you have to pay a certain amount first. How high the deductible is depends on the insurer and is also partly up to you.

Different coverages for your caravan in a caravan insurance policy

There are a number of different coverages available for your caravan. In any case, the caravan is already covered under your car's third-party liability (TPL) insurance. Damage you cause to others is then already insured. However, there are extensions to this that cover more than just the damage you cause to others. Most insurers offer you a choice of three types of coverage: standard, comprehensive and extra comprehensive. Depending on the coverage you choose, you will pay a higher, lower or no deductible. The coverage of the different insurance policies also differs. You would be wise to consider what you want to insure before choosing an insurer. After all, the cheapest premium is not always the best choice for your caravan.

When do I not pay a deductible?

In a few cases, an insurer does not apply a deductible. Often you will then pay a higher premium for your caravan insurance. However, in most cases insurers will still have a compulsory excess. It is also possible that for standard damage there is no excess, but for hail damage there is a separate excess. In the policy conditions you can find out if there is an excess and how high it is.

How high is the deductible?

How high the deductible is varies by insurer and by coverage. Some caravan insurance policies may be very cheap, but you may then have to pay a lot yourself in case of damage. Some insurers apply a (high) deductible for your caravan. If you get or make damage to your caravan, you are not waiting for high costs afterwards. It is therefore important to carefully compare the various insurance policies. This way you will not be faced with any surprises. Ideally, of course, you should have insurance with good coverage at a competitive price. It may also be that in some cases insurers do not charge a deductible, and in other cases they do. Many insurers require that the damage caused be repaired at a company with which the insurer has made agreements. In that case, you do not pay a deductible. You may also have to pay a deductible for certain damages. Think of damage caused by your own actions or damage caused by hail or other weather conditions.

On average, the deductible is between €0 and €250. When you have a minor damage to your caravan, you may wonder whether it is wise to claim it with your caravan insurance. In the case of a small dent, it may be wiser to pay for it yourself rather than claim it from your insurer. For example, if you have a standard deductible of €200 in the case of a small dent, it often pays more to pay for this damage yourself and leave your deductible intact.

Increase deductible

As with car insurance, in most cases it is possible to voluntarily increase your deductible. You will then pay less premium per month. This way you can easily save euros on your caravan insurance. When comparing your caravan insurance you should pay attention to the amount of the deductible compared to the premium per month. This way you can calculate whether it is interesting to increase your deductible. Of course, it still remains a risk, as you never know in advance if damage to your caravan will occur.

Increasing your deductible also means that you will have to pay a higher amount yourself in case of damage. The damage amount remaining after deducting the deductible will be paid out by the insurer. Suppose you have a damage of €3,200 and your deductible is 2.00, the insurer will pay you €3,200-€2.00=€3,000.
