What does the third-party insurance not cover
Do you take out commercial vehicle insurance with third-party coverage? Then, in principle, you are only insured for damage you cause to others. But what about your damage?
Go directly to
Car and driver
Damage to your company car will not be reimbursed by your insurer. Nor will your insurer reimburse you for damage due to injury (bodily injury) or material damage resulting from an accident. Your passengers are insured for both personal injury and material damage (such as luggage). If you want to be insured for this as a driver, you have to take out passenger insurance.
Insurance for passengers
Sometimes it can take a long time to know who caused the accident. Your passengers then have to wait a long time before the insurer pays the damages. With passenger insurance you can avoid this problem. Because this insurance pays out quickly, without taking the question of guilt into account.
Exclusions
There are situations when your insurer does not have to pay for the damage caused by your business car. For example, if your car is stolen. If the thief causes damage with your company car, the other party can recover the damage from the Guarantee Fund. Joyriding without opening your car by force is not considered theft. In that case the third-party coverage of your business car insurance is valid.
Are you participating in a legal car rally or other competition? Then your insurer does not have to compensate your damage. Because then the organizer of the competition has arranged a collective insurance for all participants. Did the organizer not arrange a collective insurance? Also then your insurer does not have to pay the damage. Because you are not insured for participation in road races.
In all other situations, your auto insurer must always compensate the other party for damages. But it may be that your insurer recovers the damage from you. Then you have to pay for the damage yourself. This is only possible if the insurer has included the exclusions in the policy conditions. Usually these are exclusions where the damage was caused:
- by a driver who has drunk too much alcohol
- by a driver without a (valid) driver's license
- was made on purpose or with your approval
- while the car is used in a different way than stated, for example, as a cab (while private car insurance is in place)
