How is the premium calculated?
You want a good home contents insurance to protect your possessions. Think of your furniture, clothing and home accessories. The value of your possessions can quickly mount up. The differences in premiums for home contents insurance are sometimes large. The amount of the premium is determined by various factors. Below we explain how the premium of your household contents insurance is calculated.
Calculate contents insurance premium
The differences in premiums can be large. How the premium of a contents insurance is calculated depends on a number of factors:
- Value of contents, the higher the amount, the higher the premium. Read more about calculatingthe value of your household effects here .
- Type of cover. The more risks there are to cover, the higher the premium.
- Nature of construction: The material of the house and the roof affects the premium. A dwelling made entirely of wood is more likely to suffer fire damage than one made of stone.
- Place of residence: Statistically, the risk of damage is greater in Amsterdam than in rural Groningen. The higher the risk of burglary, the higher the premium.
- Excess amount: Most insurance companies apply an excess. This means that damage is only covered when it exceeds the excess. The higher the excess, the lower the premium and vice versa.
- BORG certificate: If your home is properly secured against burglary, you can often get a discount on your premium. For this you must submit a valid BORG certificate or the police approval mark 'safe living'.
Pay a monthly or six-monthly premium for contents insurance?
The premium for the home contents insurance is usually paid monthly and by direct debit. With most insurers, you can also indicate that you wish to pay the premium every quarter, six months or annually.
Compare contents insurance premiums
Comparing household insurance policies yourself is not always easy. Each insurer has its own policy conditions. To make a good comparison, policies should be comparable in content and coverage. A low premium is not automatically a bad coverage and a high premium is not automatically the best coverage. At Alpina, we are happy to help you compare your contents insurance.
