Is my bicycle insured in the contents insurance?
Your bicycle stolen! An annoying situation of course. Whether you are insured when your bicycle is stolen depends on how you are insured. Is your bicycle insured in the contents insurance? We explain it to you.
Does a bicycle fall under the contents insurance?
When your bicycle is stolen, it is best to report it to the police as soon as possible. Then contact your insurer or agent as soon as possible to report the theft. Whether your bicycle is covered by your home contents insurance depends on the situation. Your insurer or agent can often tell you immediately whether your damage is covered.
Has your bicycle been stolen from your home or shed? Then in most cases it is covered by your contents insurance. You have to be able to prove that your bicycle was locked and that the shed/house in which it was stored was locked. Is this not the case? Then the insurer will not pay the damage. So always make sure your bicycle is locked and your house or shed is locked. There also has to be traces of breaking and entering in the house or shed from where your bicycle was stolen.
Has your bicycle been stolen from somewhere other than your home or shed? In most cases, your bicycle is not covered under your home contents insurance. You will have to take out a separate bicycle insurance for this.
