Are my things in the garden insured under home contents insurance?

The holidays are behind us again and most people are already talking about summer. Enjoying barbecues, having a glass of wine in the garden or swimming. Many people also leave tablets, phones and other valuables in the garden during the summer. 'I'll only be gone for five minutes anyway.' But what if it gets stolen? Or you collapse through the garden chair? Are these items then insured? And what is insured in your garden? In this article we look at contents insurance for your garden. What is covered and what is not you can read below.

What damage does insurance cover to your garden

Damage you may have to your garden is covered by contents and home insurance. Contents insurance covers damage to the following items: Garden furniture, lawn mowers, a flagpole, laundry on the clothesline, an umbrella, (often including trees, shrubs and plants) and materials stored in the shed or an outbuilding.

What does insurance not cover in your yard

The garden differs from indoors in a number of ways. For example, tablets, phones, laptops that you leave on the garden table because you are "just going to get the laundry" are usually not insured. The insurance company gives the reason for this: the risk of accidents is greater outdoors than indoors.

Insurance also generally does not cover consequential weather damage. Think of storms. In case of fire, the insurance will probably pay out, but damage caused by a hailstorm, for example, will not. This is because in the Netherlands, damage to contents due to weather conditions is almost never paid out.

Theft of plants, shrubs and trees or vandalism from your yard also generally leaves you uninsured. Theft from your shed is often different. That is often reimbursed, but there is almost always the requirement that there must be signs of forced entry as proof of the theft.

What to do if you suffer damage

First, of course, it is important to take plenty of pictures of the damage you have sustained. After that, bring as many belongings to safety as possible and file the damage incurred immediately.

Because a garden is often a fairly open space, most insurers make many demands before they proceed to pay out. As you have already read, not everything is covered by the insurance company. Always take a good look at the policy and the conditions you have so that you are not confronted with unpleasant surprises. Not every insurance company has the garden covered as standard. It is also true that not every insurance company pays unlimited amounts for damage to your garden. Sometimes they have set a maximum per claim that you will be paid.
