How do you file a claim on contents insurance?
With contents insurance, you are insured against damage to your household goods from certain causes. How will the insurer reimburse you for the damage? What do you have to do for this?
You take out household contents insurance to be able to recover damage to your household contents from the insurer. In the event of damage from an insured cause, you can bill the insurer. But beware! There are major differences between home contents insurance policies. Some insurance policies provide more generous compensation than others. What about and how do you claim a loss?
How do you claim a loss on contents insurance?
The quickest way to report a claim is to call the insurer. The insurer will probably ask you to still fill out a claim form. This is because the form serves as evidence for the claim report and it provides a record of the facts. Based on a completed claim form, the insurer will pay the claim amount. Upon receipt, the insurer will process the claim.

What is insured in contents insurance?
There is sometimes confusion about what is contents and what should be insured in the homeowners policy. Normally, you insure everything nailed to the house on the home insurance policy. Anything not nailed to the house is considered contents. So a built-in closet falls under the home's insurance and a loose closet falls under contents insurance. Most contents insurance policies offer what is known as extra comprehensive coverage. Here you can think of coverage against, for example:
- Fire
- Burglary and theft
- Storm and hail damage
- Certain types of water damage
There are also all-risk contents insurance policies. These policies offer broader coverage. For example, damaging a smartphone by dropping it is even insured within this form of insurance.
How long is the benefit delayed?
After notification, the insurer will start assessing the claim. They may pay out within a few business days, but the settlement may also take weeks. Especially if the damage is extensive, an expert will be called in. This can determine the cause of damage and determine the amount of the claim at your home.
Submit the claim form fully completed
A claim form when filing a claim may seem like a formality, but don't take it too lightly. Make sure the form is filled out as completely as possible. If there are questions and ambiguities, you run the risk of having the form returned to you. Are you unsure if you need to fill in certain questions? If so, contact the insurer. Not filling out the form completely can seriously delay the claim settlement.
You can also compare household insurance policies
Comparing car insurance to save a lot of money has already become fairly common among most Dutch people. Comparisons can also be useful for home insurance. This is because the differences in premiums between insurers are also large for home contents insurance.
