The Risks of Cybercrime
Unfortunately, cyberattacks occur on a daily basis and are not without risks.More and more Dutch companiesare recognizing the dangers of cybercrime. This is evident from the number of measures companies are taking to prevent cyberattacks. Due to the sharp increase in digital traffic, the threat of cybercrime will persist in the coming years.
The mainrisksposedby cybercrimeinclude:
- Data Theft
When customer and/or supplier data is leaked, hackers can misuse it in various ways. - Website (temporarily) unavailable
Temporarily taking the website offline can lead to a loss of revenue, since you will be unable to reach (potential) customers during that time. - High Costs
Digital fraud or the theft of personal data often results in extremely high costs. In addition, you will need to invest in digital security to prevent any future cyberattacks. - Reputational Damage
When your company falls victim to cybercriminals, it results in negative publicity. This negative publicity causes reputational damage.
Raise employee awareness of the dangers
The risks associated with digitizing businesses are quite significant. It’s important not to underestimate these risks and to make your staff aware of the potential dangers.Employees are often not sufficiently aware of the dangersof cybercrime. For example, they frequently use the same password for multiple websites. In addition, software updates are often delayed for too long. This makes it even easier for cybercriminals to strike. Clearly explain why it’s important to use strong passwords and to vary them. Also emphasize the importance of software updates and warn employees about emails from unknown senders. Tell them not to open emails or files from people they don’t trust.
What to Do in the Event of a Cyberattack?
If you arethe victim of a cyberattack, it is important to stay calm but act quickly. To do so, follow the steps below:
- Disconnect from the Internet immediately
- Notify the IT department
- Back up your files
- Notify your bank and freeze any payment accounts
- File a report with the police.
What to Do After a Data Breach?
A data breach can occur in various ways. As a result of cybercrime, personal data belonging to third parties may fall into the hands of criminals. If this leads to security incidents, it is referred to asa data breach. A data breach is considered a violation of privacy laws. As a business, you are, in most cases, required to report this to the Dutch Data Protection Authority and, in some cases, to the individuals whose data has been compromised.
The information you are generally required to report immediately includes, among other things:
- Login credentials, such as usernames and passwords.
- Financial information about the parties involved.
- Medical and psychological information.
- Personal social data.
If you fail to report a data breach when you are required to, you risk a hefty fine.

Forms of Cybercrime
Cybercriminals can attack your business online in a variety of ways. Below is a brief overview of the most common types of attacks.
Phishing
Phishing involves requests for your personal information via email or a website. These emails may appear to be sent by, for example, your bank. Never disclose personal information, such as passwords or your PIN, without verifying its authenticity. Also, never click on a link in an email without first verifying its authenticity. If in doubt, always contact the company that supposedly sent the email.
Malware
Malware is the general term for harmful software. If cybercriminals infect your computer with malware, they can lock your files. A virus is a well-known type of malware.
Identity Fraud
Identity fraud affects both individuals and businesses. In such cases, your identity is used to order products or services. Sometimes, these false identities are used to carry out illegal activities.
