Sick leave in practice

Short-term absenteeism

1 to 6 weeks of illness

In the first few weeks, absenteeism is relatively easy to deal with. Colleagues can usually take over the work temporarily.

The main cost is the cost of the mandatory 70% salary continuation, but short-term loss of productivity and extra overtime also add to the cost.

Medium absenteeism

6 to 42 weeks of illness

Temporary replacement is needed after several weeks of illness. This means additional costs for recruitment and selection, temporary hiring, familiarisation and loss of productivity.

In addition, you will incur costs for mandatory health and safety services, internal absence counseling and reintegration.

Long-term absenteeism

42 weeks to 2 years of illness

In cases of long-term illness, suitable work is mandatory. If this does not work out, it should be considered whether this can be done with another employer.

An occupational survey is also mandatory.

For both obligations, the cost is for the employer.

What are your absenteeism costs?

Assuming an average monthly salary of €3,600 (CPB 2024), the cost of absenteeism per sick employee is easily €9,000 per month.

Sample calculation:

Payroll continuation € 162
Cost of replacement € 202
Turnover loss € 47
Occupational health and safety service costs € 12
Internal absenteeism counseling € 10
Total per day of illness € 433

Long-term absenteeism is on the rise

"Almost a quarter of all absenteeism in 2023 was caused by stress (overwork or burnout). With stress-related complaints, employees are not fully at work for an average of 240 days. With burnout, this is even 300 days."
