Frequently asked questions car insurance

Which type of insurance should I choose?

Several factors come into play when choosing a form of insurance. For example, you can think about the age and the daily value of the car, but also the accumulated claim-free years. If you have several years of damage-free driving, you can often choose the most comprehensive insurance at a fairly low premium. The choice for the best coverage should be well-considered. After all, the premium must be in proportion to the current value of the car. For example, for a 12-year-old car, it often does not make sense to choose the most comprehensive car insurance. The daily value of your car weighs heavily in this regard.

Can you get car insurance without a driving licence?

Not all insurers can insure your vehicle when you are (temporarily) without a driver's license. However, you are required by law to have car insurance for your vehicle. The RDW (Department of Road Transport) checks this and can issue fines if you do not comply. You can insure a car with us without having a driver's license.

When am I obliged to insure my car?

You are required by law to insure a car as soon as the license plate is placed in your name. From that moment on, your details as owner are known to the Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW). A car that has already been transferred into your name, but is still at the seller, for example, must be insured in your name from the moment it is registered. It is not obligatory to insure your car for limited casco or All Risk. Read more about when car insurance is mandatory here

What is a registration code?

You will need your vehicle 's registration code when you transfer the vehicle to another owner's name, when you apply for a license plate suspension, when you have the license plate cancelled at the registration desk, or when you scrap the vehicle.

Accumulation of claim-free years

Is it true that you previously had automotive insurance in your name with another insurer?

If Yes
Have you already instructed the insurer to terminate it? It may be that this has not happened yet, so your claim-free years have not yet been credited in
roydata. You can check this with your previous insurer.

If the policy is not terminated, the years will also not be credited in roydata and unfortunately you will not be able to use them with new insurance. The claim-free years are seen as a security, just like a banknote, you can only spend them once.

With a moped, this is not recorded in roydata, but an original termination statement from the previous insurance company must follow. This is also called a termination statement or bonus/malus statement.

If the years do not follow then the insurer will have to adjust the discount on your policy. The basic premium will remain the same, however, you will receive less discount, which will increase the net premium for you.

If no
If the policy is not terminated, the years will also not be credited in roydata and unfortunately you cannot use them with new insurance. The claim-free years are seen as a security, just like a bank bill, you can only spend them once.

If the years do not follow then the insurer will have to adjust the discount on your policy. The basic premium will remain the same, however, you will receive less discount, which will increase the net premium for you.

Can I make payment arrangements with Alpina?

If you call with a question about an outstanding premium or want to make a payment arrangement, we at Alpina cannot help you. It is better to contact the insurer directly. Click here for an overview of the telephone numbers of the various insurers.

Has your policy's premium increased?

If all goes well, you should have received a new policy endorsement by email or mail. This states what the reason for a premium increase may be;

    • Adjustment of claim-free years
    • No available claim-free years were found in roydata, or a different number than you stated when you applied. This changes the discount on your policy. The basic premium has remained the same, but because the discount is different, the net premium will change.

With a moped, this is not recorded in roydata, but an original termination statement from the previous insurance company must follow. This is also called a termination statement or bonus/malus statement.
