When is someone considered a defaulter by an insurer?

There are times when you may completely forget to pay your insurance premium or fail to do so on time. Fortunately, you won't get an immediate CIS registration in that case. However, if it happens more often or a large payment delay occurs, you will be considered a defaulter. This can have major consequences. The following explains when someone is a defaulter and what the exact consequences are with regard to insurance.

When is there a non-payment?

Many insurers do not immediately create a big problem when the premium is once not paid on time. The term non-payment is not always used immediately. Perhaps there was just a financial setback this month and there is a good reason. Initially, a warning will be issued after which the premium can still be paid. You are only considered a defaulter when the premium is still not paid after several warnings. Therefore, the definition of a defaulter is: someone who uses a particular service or product without paying.

Consequences of non-payment in relation to insurance

If you completely forget to pay the insurance premium, a reminder will first come from the insurer. There is no problem if this reminder is paid on time. However, if the payment is still not paid after more than 30 days, insurers may suspend coverage, for example in the case of car insurance. The car insurance is suspended and your license plate is deregistered at the RDW, which means that the car is no longer insured. You may then also no longer drive the car. A report is made of this, which all insurers can see in the system.

The insurer can also cancel the insurance. This can happen when, for example, you still haven't paid after a period longer than 50 days. This means that the insurance is terminated. You then no longer have to pay premiums, but are also immediately uninsured. If there is an overdue payment, it must still be paid even after the expulsion.

In case of a cancelled insurance policy, a registration as defaulter in the CIS database follows. This database is maintained by the CIS Foundation. All information that could have major consequences for insurance companies is recorded here. So also when an insurance has been cancelled as a result of non-payment. This data is visible to all affiliated insurers and they can consult the database at any time for information about customers.

Before an insurance application is accepted, the company always looks to see if the applicant has a CIS registration. Thus, such a registration always surfaces and can cause difficulties when applying for insurance. Therefore, chances are that your application will not be accepted if there is a CIS registration. This is because you pose too great a risk to the insurance company.

How long does a registration of non-payment remain?

On average, a CIS registration as a defaulter remains for 3 to 5 years. Exactly how long varies per situation and depends on the size of the problem. During the entire registration period, this is visible to all insurers at all times. A regular insurance company will probably not want to insure you, but with De Vereende it will be possible. The company is specifically set up for insuring risks and even when there is a registration in the CIS database you will be able to take out insurance here. Almost every application is accepted and the underwriting policy is very broad. When the registration as a defaulter disappears again, you can get re-insured with a regular company.
