Car insurance after driving disqualification
With a driving disqualification, it can be difficult to get auto insurance. There are many reasons why you can get a driving disqualification, such as driving under the influence or dangerous behavior on the road. The length of a driving disqualification can also vary widely. Still, it is possible to get car insurance despite this disqualification.
When do you get a driving disqualification?
If you get a driving ban, it means that you are not allowed to drive a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. This applies to ALL motorized vehicles, not just cars. You can be banned from driving for a few days, weeks, months or even years. The police, a prosecutor or a judge can impose a driving ban.
These are the reasons and situations for which you can get a driving ban:
- Driving under the influence of too much alcohol or drugs
- Driving on after (causing) an accident
- Driving more than 50 kilometres per hour too fast
- Driving while disqualified or with an invalid driving licence
Concealing your driving disqualification makes no sense
An insurance company does not know in advance if you have had a driving record. That's why you have to answer some questions about your past when taking out auto insurance. Including a question about whether you have ever had a driving ban. If you indicate that you have previously had a driving ban, your application will likely be rejected.
It makes no sense to hide your driving record with your application. If you give false information to the insurer, you are committing insurance fraud. Also, you are actually driving around uninsured because the insurance is based on incorrect information. Even if you have current insurance on paper and pay your premium on time, the insurance is not valid.
CIS registration after driving disqualification
It is important to be honest about a previous driving disqualification when applying for auto insurance. If you lie about this, it will be harder to get insurance later. In fact, insurance companies have a system that allows them to see if someone has had a driving disqualification.
If it turns out you lied about this, a "fraud alert" will be added to your name. We call this a CIS registration. CIS is the abbreviation of "Central Information System Foundation. This foundation is for all insurers and proxies. The CIS manages important information for insurers. This report is visible to all insurers. For you, this means that it may later be more difficult and expensive to obtain ordinary car insurance.
