What is an ART lock?

Most insurers have a security requirement with moped insurance or motorcycle insurance. This requirement is set for third-party theft or all-risk coverage. The lock used must be an ART lock.

The ART mark has different levels of security indicated by stars. That star system works simply. The more stars a lock has, the better its security value.

Different categories of ART locks

ART two-wheeler locks, in terms of the degree of protection against theft, are divided into categories 1 through 5.

Obviously, a category 1 lock has a lower theft prevention than a lock from a higher category. A category 5 lock has passed the toughest test in the ART test regulations. A lock from this category may be required by an insurer when storing the motorcycle at home. For motorcycles on the road, a category 4 lock will often suffice because these locks are suitable for taking with you.

Insurance companies often clearly indicate in the policy conditions - depending on the type of two-wheeler - which category the lock must be from as a condition for obtaining insurance.

ART Class 2 locks

This class is particularly suitable for bicycles with or without auxiliary motors.

ART Class 3 locks

This class is particularly suitable for mopeds.

ART Class 4 locks

This class is particularly suitable for motorcycles.

Proper use ART lock combination

When purchasing a loose ART approved padlock and a loose ART approved chain, it is important to carefully consider which lock combinations* are the correct ones.

In practice it happens that, for example, an ART approved steel chain is used in combination with a non- ART approved padlock. The packaging (with ART approval mark!) of a loose padlock or chain should always state which lock combinations are possible. Make sure that this is not deviated from. Other lock combinations are not ART approved! This may mean that you do not meet the conditions set by your insurance company for the lock.

*Lock combinations also refers to a steel chain with brake disc lock or bicycle ring lock.
