Is a modified moped insured?
A handy mechanic can easily tune up a moped. But did you know that atuned-up moped isn’t covered by moped insurance? Moped riders are mostly afraid of getting a ticket, but the real big problems arise in the event of an accident involving the moped.
There’s a good reason why mopeds are limited to a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour or less. This limit was established to promote traffic safety. Furthermore, these vehicles aren’t designed to handle much higher speeds. So modifying the maximum speed is simply dangerous.
Will the insurer cover damage caused by a modified moped?
The insurer provides coverage for damages resulting from liability to third parties. Depending on the coverage selected, the insurer may also provide coverage for damage to the moped itself. For moped insurance, the insurer bases its coverage on the vehicle’s legally permitted maximum speed. Modifying the moped to increase its speed raises the risk of damage, and in the event of a claim, the average cost of the damage will also be higher. This is because moped insurance does not provide coverage if it is determined that the moped has been modified to increase its speed.
The insurance company won't pay out! What now?
In the event of a collision with a car, the damage is likely to be limited to bodywork damage and damage to the moped itself. A moped insurance policy that doesn’t pay out only becomes a problem when the moped causes personal injury. A collision with a pedestrian can result in damages running into the hundreds of thousands of euros. Just imagine if the victim is never able to work again and has to completely adapt their home to accommodate a disability. If the insurer doesn’t pay out, you’ll be on the hook for the damages yourself. Don’t have the money? Then the claim will continue to haunt you. As soon as you do have the money, you’ll still have to pay the damages.
It's possible that the moped insurance will pay out after all
Third-party liability insurance for mopeds is mandatory. This requirement was established to guarantee that victims will be compensated for damage caused by a motor vehicle. The insurer providing the moped insurance is required to compensate for damages resulting from liability. In the case of a modified moped, however, the insurer has the option to recover the compensation paid from the person who caused the damage while operating the modified moped. For example, the insurer might pay the victim €50,000 and then recover that amount from the owner of the modified moped.
Don't take unnecessary risks and don't ride a modified moped. One small driving error could result in a damage claim that you'll have to pay for the rest of your life.
